Which marketing agencies in Australia two assistants actually named, with the reading count behind each name

Six firms with the count of readings each appeared in, the criterion stated so you can disagree with it, and the free register check to run before hiring any of them.

Six Australian agencies were named without being prompted across 64 blind readings taken on 22 October 2026. Online Marketing Gurus appeared in 12 readings, Rocket Agency in 8, StudioHawk in 8, Prosperity Media in 8, Sparro in 3 and King Kong in 3. That is the ranking this page reports and the criterion is explicit: how often two AI assistants named the firm when an Australian buyer asked who to hire, with no firm named in the question.

The criterion is checkable and narrow. It measures visibility in machine answers. It does not measure delivery quality, client retention or value for money, and it should not be read as if it did. If you want a different ranking, pick a criterion you can check and count it.

The method, so the count means something

We put 33 batches of buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Australia written into the text of every question. The market had to go in the prompt because the search interface we use accepts a country parameter, a language parameter and a location parameter, answers HTTP 200 to each, and ignores all three. The snapshot taken that evening holds 64 blind readings, 32 on each engine. The brand batch naming us in the question is excluded, because a question containing an answer is a ceiling rather than a result.

The six, and what the answers associated each one with

AgencyReadings it was named in, of 64What the answers associated it with
Online Marketing Gurus12Broad performance marketing and search, the most consistently named across both engines
Rocket Agency8Search and paid media for mid sized Australian businesses
StudioHawk8Search specifically, with a narrow and visible specialism
Prosperity Media8Search and digital PR
Sparro3Paid media at a larger account size
King Kong3Performance and direct response work

Their own sites appeared as sources too. rocketagency.com.au came back in 5 of the 64 readings and studiohawk.com.au in 3. The spread between first and fourth is four readings out of 64, on one day, across two engines, which is narrower than a ranked list makes it look. Treat it as two groups: four firms in roughly the same position and two appearing less often.

The gap between the named few and everybody else

The sharper finding is how little competition there is for the rest of it. In 28 of the 64 readings the engines named no business at all. 16 of ChatGPT's 32 readings and 12 of Gemini's 32 contained no supplier to contact.

So Australia has a short occupied shortlist and a very large unoccupied one. An agency outside the named six has two options with completely different costs. Competing for the headline shortlist question means displacing a firm named 12 times out of 64. Competing for the 28 empty answers means being the first concrete, checkable page on a narrower buying question, and nobody is defending those.

What the engines read to decide this

Two things dominate and the first is unusual. Sixty six distinct Australian government hosts appeared 139 times across 25 of the 64 readings. business.gov.au in 15 readings, accc.gov.au in 13, acma.gov.au in 8, oaic.gov.au in 6, legislation.gov.au in 5, business.qld.gov.au in 5, nsw.gov.au in 4, consumer.gov.au in 4, buy.nsw.gov.au in 4. When an Australian marketing question has any compliance or procurement edge, the engines reach for the state before they reach for a vendor.

Second, a long tail of Australian agency and specialist sites: localdigital.com.au in 9 readings, digitalnomadshq.com.au in 8, 3pdigital.com.au in 7, soupagency.com.au in 7, firstpage.com.au in 7, odindigital.com.au in 6, iabaustralia.com.au in 6, profitgeeks.com.au in 5. Of 1,010 distinct hosts returned, 435 carried an Australian domain. International directories appeared too, with clutch.co in 11 readings and designrush.com in 6, and staging.clutch.co appeared in 2, which is a directory's staging environment rather than anything a publisher meant to serve.

What the government weight tells a buyer about the shortlist

That 139 government host appearances across 25 readings changes how to read the agency names beside them. A buyer asking an Australian supplier question is often being handed a regulator page, a small specialist site and one or two agency names in the same answer, which means the agency was named next to a rule rather than next to a competitor. The practical consequence for a shortlist is that an agency which can speak fluently about the compliance frame around your category is answering the question the engines are already framing, and one that cannot is being compared against a government page it never mentions. Ask each firm on your list which Australian rule shapes marketing in your sector, and listen for whether the answer names something specific.

The check to run before you hire any of them

Whoever you shortlist, check the people first. ASIC runs a free search for this and says why in its own words, read on asic.gov.au on 22 October 2026: it keeps registers of people and organisations that are disqualified or banned from roles in corporations, financial services or the credit industry, and it is a good idea to check people and organisations before you deal with them. The Banned and Disqualified search covers six registers at once. ASIC also keeps a separate court enforceable undertakings register and states that people who give one will not always appear on the banned and disqualified registers, so a complete check is both searches.

Questions about ranking Australian agencies this way

Is being named by an assistant the same as being good

No, and this page says so twice because it is the likeliest misreading. The count measures how often a machine reached for a name. Delivery is answered by references and a paid audit.

Why only six names

Because that is how many appeared. A search result for the same question would list ten organic links and several ads; these answers handed a buyer four to six firms doing most of the work.

Could an agency buy its way onto this list

Not directly. The sources behind these answers were government pages, third party Australian sites and the firms' own published work, which is earned. That is also why it is worth competing for.

Does this cover Perplexity, Claude or AI Overviews

No. This run is ChatGPT and Gemini. Our product watches five surfaces and this dataset covers two, and the two stay separate in every sentence.

What would change this ranking

A month. The scorecard behind this page was still being written on the evening of 22 October 2026, which is why these figures carry the snapshot date rather than a running total.

The register that is free and the credential that is not

There is a usable asymmetry in this market. An Australian agency can be verified against public registers in ten minutes at no cost, and its claim to AI search competence cannot be verified at all, because no register exists for that. ASIC's own page, read on asic.gov.au on 22 October 2026, says you can search 6 ASIC registers at once using its Banned and Disqualified search, and that it is a good idea to check people and organisations before you deal with them. It also keeps a separate court enforceable undertakings register and states that people who give one will not always appear on the banned and disqualified registers, so the thorough version is both. Run those searches on everybody on your shortlist, then ask each of them for the one thing no register holds: a dated reading of a fixed question list, taken twice. We publish ours, including the half that embarrasses us, because across all 64 of these Australian readings our own name appeared zero times and our domain was cited zero times. AI Knows Us exists to produce that file across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and an agency that cannot produce one for itself is asking you to take the whole thing on trust.
