Which Shopify SEO expert to hire, and the four store problems an expert cannot fix for you
Shopify publishes a partner directory with four tiers and no published criteria for any of them. That is the instrument you have, and this page explains what it does and does not prove.

Hiring a Shopify SEO expert is a reasonable purchase and it is also the second decision. The first is working out whether your problem is one an expert can fix at all, because four of the most common Shopify ranking problems are platform behaviour rather than configuration, and paying somebody monthly to fight them is the most expensive way to learn that.
The four problems an expert cannot fix for you
Your catalogue is too thin to rank for the terms you want. Thirty products in a category where competitors list three hundred is a commercial problem wearing an SEO costume. No expert can fix it and an honest one will tell you in the first call.
Your product descriptions are the manufacturer's. If the same words are on forty other stores, there is nothing to rank. This is writing work, and it is yours or a writer's rather than a technical specialist's.
Your prices are not competitive and shoppers compare before clicking. Ranking a page that loses on price raises your bounce rate and nothing else.
Nobody has ever linked to you. A new store with no mentions anywhere needs public relations, partnerships or community presence. A technical audit cannot manufacture it.
What an expert genuinely can fix is the collection page structure, the variant URL handling, app bloat and the template level markup, and that work has a real and measurable effect on a store with an otherwise sound catalogue.
The criterion this page ranks on, and the instrument is Shopify's
Individual Shopify SEO experts publish no rate card, so there is nothing to rank them on that a buyer can check. There is one checkable instrument and Shopify publishes it. Read at shopify.com/partners/directory on 21 October 2026, it is called the Shopify Partner Directory, and it lists SEO as a service category under marketing and sales, with search engine advertising as a separate category.
So the directory ranks first on this page, and this page ranks no individual expert. Checking a shortlist against it before the first call is free and takes a minute.
Now the honest limits of that instrument, because they are significant. The page does not describe a vetting or review process. In its own words, "Partners are tiered based on multiple factors, including their history of experience and proven success on Shopify", and it does not say what those factors are. It lists four tiers, Plus, Select, Premier and Platinum, and publishes no criteria for reaching any of them. It publishes no rates and no minimum project sizes. It does suggest the buyer "Check reviews, work samples, certifications, and more to make an informed choice", which is advice rather than verification.
So a directory listing proves a partner relationship exists. It does not prove SEO competence, because the tiers are not defined and the SEO category is self selected. Treat it as a filter that removes the unlisted, not as a ranking.
The five questions that identify a real Shopify specialist
How do you handle variant URLs. The single best diagnostic question on this platform. A specialist has an immediate, specific answer and a generalist talks about keywords.
How many apps am I running and which ones are in the theme. App bloat is a leading cause of slow Shopify stores and auditing it needs access rather than opinion.
What will you change in the theme code, and who approves it. If the answer is nothing, half the available work is off the table.
What is the fixed price for the technical work, separate from any monthly fee. The technical work is finite. Insist it is priced as a project.
What would you tell me not to spend money on. An expert with no answer to this is selling a package.
The surface a Shopify store cannot see in its own analytics
Shopify reports sessions and their sources. A shopper asking an assistant which brand to buy in your category, and receiving three names in prose, creates no session and sends no referrer. If your store is not one of the names, your analytics does not show a lost visit. It shows nothing.
AI Knows Us exists for that single gap, and we are not an SEO expert and not a Shopify app. We change nothing in your store and we touch no theme. We watch the buying questions your market asks across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and report which answers name your store, which name a competitor and which name nobody at all. The limits to judge us on are published rather than quoted on a call. At aiknowsus.com/pricing, read 23 October 2026, Growth at 299 dollars a month covers 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers across all five surfaces, Scale at 599 dollars covers 300 questions and 3,500 scheduled answers, and a Claude check costs 3 credits where most checks cost 1. SEO Start at 149 dollars renders zero buyer questions, zero credits and zero engines, so it does not do this job and the floor price is not the price of this work. The page also publishes a free scan, in its own words "Run a free scan on your own domain and read what the AI apps say about you today", with "No account needed".
Where a rival beats us, and it is the fact a procurement reviewer will care about most. Our rendered pricing text carries no SSO, no SOC 2, no ISO certification, no white label and no data processing agreement, checked on 21 October 2026. Vendors in our own category do publish some of those. If you are buying under a security review, that absence is the more important fact about us than anything else on this page. And one plain priority note: if your variant URLs are generating duplicate pages today, hire the expert first. A measurement of what assistants say about you is worth less than a store that can rank, and we would rather say so than take the budget.
Scope
This page is about hiring a person. It deliberately does not target seo for shopify sites, shopify store seo, shopify seo checklist, shopify seo tools, best shopify seo apps or shopify agency, all of which existing pages on this site already pool. If your question is what to fix rather than who to hire, the collection pages and variant URLs page is the right one, and if it is which app to install, the apps comparison is separate again.
What store owners ask
Expert or app. An app configures. An expert decides. If nobody on your team can decide, you need the expert.
How long is a sensible first engagement. A fixed scope technical project of two to six weeks, then a pause to measure, then a decision about content. Not a twelve month retainer on day one.
Will Shopify itself fix any of this. It fixes some things over time and it will not restructure your collections or write your descriptions.
If you are weighing a paid app rather than a person, our page on what the Avada SEO Suite does for a Shopify store and what its plans cost. No other page on this site links to that one, measured on 21 October 2026 across 2,490 stored bodies (2,118 published drafts plus 372 fetched live pages) against 2,404 live pages, with my own wave excluded. 978 of those 2,404 pages, 40.7 percent, carry no inbound link from anywhere on the site, and that figure is an upper bound, because a body we cannot read cannot be counted as a linker.
