Which Singapore agencies specialise by sector, and when the specialist premium is worth paying

Four tests for whether a sector specialist is genuinely specialist, and the one sector where generalist work reliably fails.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

A sector specialist is worth a premium in exactly three situations and not otherwise. When the category is regulated and a wrong claim is expensive. When the buying cycle is long enough that understanding it saves months. And when the vocabulary is genuinely technical, so a generalist writer produces fluent copy that a buyer can tell is wrong. Outside those three, a good generalist with a sector briefing usually delivers the same result for less.

The hard part is telling a real specialist from an agency with three clients in your industry and a page saying so. Four tests below do that in one conversation.

The four tests

  1. Ask what they refuse to do in your sector. A genuine specialist has a list, because they have been burned. A positioning specialist has nothing to say and will offer to do everything.
  2. Ask which regulator or rule shapes your marketing, unprompted. In Singapore the answer should name something specific. For data, the Personal Data Protection Act 2012. For telemarketing, the Do Not Call provisions whose sections 43 to 48 commenced on 2 January 2014. For advertising claims, the Singapore Code of Advertising Practice administered by the Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore. A specialist in a regulated Singapore sector names at least one without being asked.
  3. Ask for the sector vocabulary error they see most often. Specialists have a favourite. It is usually a word that outsiders use that practitioners never do, and knowing it is the clearest proof of real exposure.
  4. Ask to see a dated before and after in your sector, with the window stated. Not a logo. One case with both dates and the conditions it happened under.

Where the Singapore specialist premium is reliably earned

SectorWhy a specialist earns the premium here
Financial services and anything adjacentClaims are closely watched and the engines in our audit reached mas.gov.sg in 3 of 64 readings. A generalist writing a yield or return claim is an expensive hire
Healthcare and clinicsCategory sensitivity plus a language mix in the catchment. Both are learned rather than briefed
Employment, recruitment and staffingTwo audiences with opposite needs on the same site, and the engines reached mom.gov.sg in 3 readings
Government adjacent and public sector supplyA procurement portal is the gate rather than a channel, and the engines reached gebiz.gov.sg in 2 readings
Infocomm, media and telecomsThe engines reached imda.gov.sg in 10 readings and its pre approval guide in 5, the deepest single regulator signal in the set

Those are the sectors where a buyer's answer is framed by a rule, which is exactly where a supplier who cannot name the rule loses credibility in the first meeting.

Where a generalist is the better buy

Professional services, most business to business software, trades and home services, and most retail. In those, the work is well understood, the claims are low risk, and what varies is execution quality rather than sector knowledge. A generalist with a two hour briefing from your own subject expert will match a specialist, and you will keep the premium.

There is one exception worth naming. If your category is crowded with similar suppliers, a specialist who has already published about the category may bring visibility you cannot buy, because the published body of work is what the engines read. That is a visibility argument rather than a competence argument and it should be priced as one.

What the engines named, and what it says about specialisation

On 22 October 2026 we put 33 batches of buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini with Singapore written into the text of each one, because the search interface we use accepts country, language and location parameters and ignores all three. The snapshot taken that evening holds 64 blind readings, 32 per engine.

The Singapore agencies named were First Page in 17 readings, MediaOne in 12, Impossible Marketing in 11, OOm in 10, Clickr in 2 and Verz in 1. The associations the answers made were by service rather than by sector: search, paid media, content, ecommerce build. No Singapore agency was named as a sector specialist in any of the 64 readings.

Be careful about what that establishes. Our questions were marketing and supplier buying questions across sectors rather than sector by sector probes, so a sector specialist naming was not really available to be found. What it does suggest is that in this market the machine layer currently sorts agencies by service line, and an agency that wants to be found as a sector specialist has very little competition for that position.

What to put in the brief either way

  • Your own subject expert, named, for two hours a month. This is what turns a generalist into a specialist for your account, and it is the cheapest thing on the list.
  • A claims reviewer, named, for anything that carries a result or a comparison. Budget for one pre clearance review on the risky piece: ASAS publishes its advice fees, read on asas.org.sg on 22 October 2026, at S$600 or S$1,200 on a 20 working day turnaround and S$700 or S$1,400 express, which with GST are S$654, S$1,308, S$763 and S$1,526.
  • The vocabulary list. Twenty terms your buyers use and twenty they never use. One page, and it prevents most of the damage a non specialist does.
  • A dated baseline reading before any work starts. Without it there is no before, specialist or not.

Questions about sector specialist agencies in Singapore

How much more does a specialist cost

Ask three for the same scope in the same units and the spread will tell you more than any published figure. We do not restate other suppliers' prices here, which is a standing position on this site.

Is a regional specialist better than a Singapore generalist

For a regulated Singapore category, the local claims judgement usually matters more than the sector knowledge, because that judgement cannot be bought offshore. For a technical B2B category, the reverse.

What if no specialist exists in my sector here

That is common and it is not a problem. Hire the best generalist and supply the specialism yourself through a named internal expert.

Does a specialist help with AI visibility specifically

Only if they can show a question list, an engine count and two dated readings. Our page on how to report AI search visibility as a reproducible benchmark sets out what that evidence should look like when an agency produces it.

How do I check a sector claim before the meeting

Read three of their published pages about your sector. If all three could be about any sector with the nouns swapped, the specialism is positioning.

The specialist position nobody in this market has taken

Across 64 blind Singapore readings on 22 October 2026, the engines sorted agencies by service line and named none of them as a sector specialist, while reaching 39 distinct Singapore government hosts 90 times. That combination describes an opening: a buyer in a regulated Singapore sector is being handed a regulator's page and a generalist agency, with nobody in between. AI Knows Us measures which of your sector's buying questions currently return nobody at all, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, which is the fastest way for an agency to find out whether that position is open in its own category. In our own case the answer was blunt: zero namings and zero citations in all 64.
