WPP vs VML: the holding company and the agency inside it, and what each one published on 21 October 2026
These are not two competing agencies. One is a holding group and the other is an agency inside it, which changes what you are actually buying. Here is what we could and could not verify on their own sites today.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 21 October 2026
WPP and VML are not alternatives to each other. WPP is a holding group that owns agencies; VML is one of the agency brands inside it, formed by combining two existing networks. If you are comparing them, you are comparing a parent with one of its businesses, and the practical consequence is that you never hire WPP. You hire an agency it owns, and the parent decides what resources that agency can reach.
What we verified on their own sites on 21 October 2026, and what we could not
| WPP | VML | |
|---|---|---|
| What the site said | Its home page describes WPP as "the trusted growth partner for the world's leading brands" and says it is "simpler to work with, built to win" | vml.com returned HTTP 403 to our agent on that date, so nothing on it was read |
| Agency brands named on the page | None. The home page we read named no subsidiary brand at all, and the only company name on it was WPP, with a copyright line reading 1999 to 2026 | Not read |
| Scale figures published | None on that page: no headcount, no country count, no revenue | Not read |
| Prices | None | Not read |
A 403 is a server declining a request and says nothing about what the site contains. We report it because reporting it is the honest version of this page: on that date, with that agent, we could not read it. For anything about VML structure or scale, read vml.com in a normal browser, and read WPP own investor material, which is where the group publishes figures rather than on its home page.
The WPP result is worth noticing on its own terms. A holding group whose home page names none of the agencies it owns and publishes no scale figures is making a deliberate choice about who that page is for, and it is not for somebody choosing an agency. That is normal for a listed parent and it is useful to know before you spend time on it.
What this actually means for a buyer
- You hire an agency, not a group. The contract, the people and the fee come from the agency brand. The group matters for what that brand can pull in from elsewhere.
- Ask what the group adds to your account, specifically. Media buying scale, a production arm, a data product, a market you need. If nobody can name it, you are paying an agency and getting an agency.
- Ask about the sibling conflict. Holding groups routinely have two agencies pitching the same category. Ask directly whether a sibling works for a competitor and what the separation is.
- Ask who the named people are and what share of their week you get. This is the same question at every agency of any size and it is the one that decides what you receive.
- Ask what happens on renewal if your account moves between group brands. It happens, and the team can change entirely.
Independent or holding group, as a decision
A holding group agency brings scale: media buying leverage, production capacity, reach into markets you have not entered. An independent brings a shorter line to the person doing the work and no sibling conflicts. The honest trade is leverage against access. For one worked comparison of two American independents on what each publishes about itself, see PMG compared with the independents beside it, which applies the same criterion used here.
For the structural point about where creative and media actually sit in a large group account, our page on advertising agency in London covers the split, which no other page on this site links to: measured on 21 October 2026, 962 of the 2,082 pages live on this site carry no durable inbound link from any other page.
The measurement no group structure produces
Whichever brand you hire, the reporting you receive will cover media, brand and campaign performance. It will not cover whether the five assistants name your business when a buyer asks who to buy from in your category, because that is not a line any holding group sells.
It is measurable, and the method is the part that matters: a fixed set of buyer questions in buyer words, your own name absent from every prompt so the answer is not primed, repeated runs because the same question returns different companies on different days, and naming and citation recorded separately. In our own corpus of 1,872 readings one firm was cited as a source in 65 readings and named in the answer text twice, which is why those two numbers are never combined.
We sell that measurement and nothing in the table above. On creative, media, production and global coordination, a holding group agency is ahead of us by an enormous margin and we do not compete there.
Questions about WPP and VML
Is VML part of WPP?
VML is one of the agency brands within the WPP group, formed by combining two existing networks. We could not verify that on vml.com on 21 October 2026 because the site returned 403 to our agent, so read it yourself or read WPP own corporate material for the current structure.
Can I hire WPP directly?
In practice you engage one of its agency brands. The group handles corporate and investor matters, and its home page on the date we read it was addressed to that audience rather than to a prospective client.
Does a holding group agency cost more?
Rate cards tend to be higher and media leverage can be better, so the net depends on how much media you buy. Ask for the fee and the media terms as two separate conversations.
What is the sibling conflict question?
Whether another agency in the same group works for a direct competitor, and what the information separation is. Ask it in writing and get the answer in writing.
How do I compare a group agency with an independent?
Same page, same rows: total fee, split by discipline, named people and weekly hours, who owns the accounts and assets at the end, notice period, and what the parent specifically contributes to your account. The last row is the only one unique to this comparison.
