Ahrefs local SEO: what GBP Monitor and Rank Tracker do for a local business and what you still do in Google

Ahrefs groups two tools under local SEO: a Google Business Profile monitor and a rank tracker that sets location down to ZIP code. Here is what each one does, as Ahrefs described them on 22 October 2026, and how to set them up for a local business.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 21 October 2026

Ahrefs' local SEO offering is two tools. Its Local SEO page, read on 22 October 2026, lists GBP Monitor, which watches and edits Google Business Profiles, and Rank Tracker, which tracks keyword positions by country, city or ZIP code and records when you appear in the local pack. Together they cover two local jobs well: protecting your profile from unwanted edits, and measuring where you rank in the places your customers search. They suit a business already paying for Ahrefs and agencies that look after many locations. The work that moves local rankings, a complete profile, real reviews and pages that match what people search for, still happens in Google Business Profile and on your own site.

What Ahrefs lists under local SEO

ToolWhat Ahrefs says it doesMost useful for
GBP MonitorAlerts on every profile change, one-click reject and restore, change history, bulk edits, local performance figuresAgencies and multi-location businesses
Rank TrackerPositions on desktop and mobile across 190+ locations, from country to city to ZIP code, plus 19 SERP features including the local pack and AI OverviewsAnyone measuring rankings in a specific area

The page lists no citation-building or review-management tool. If those are part of your local plan, they come from Google's own tools, a local SEO platform, or your own process.

GBP Monitor: guarding the Business Profile

GBP Monitor is the newer of the two. Its product page says it is "available on all paid plans while in beta". What it does, in Ahrefs' words:

  • Change alerts. "Real-time email alerts whenever your profile is updated", whether the change comes from you, your team or Google.
  • Reject and restore. Ahrefs warns that "Competitors, or even Google, can introduce harmful edits", and the tool lets you reject a change and restore the profile with one click.
  • History. A full timeline of changes across all your profiles, with review, approve and roll back.
  • Bulk edits. Change hours, categories and more across several profiles in one action.
  • Local performance. Calls, directions, website clicks and search terms across your Google Maps locations, plus flags for missing information, verification issues and inconsistencies.

The fields it lists as manageable are business name, category, description, services, service area, opening date, opening hours, special hours, location, website, phone numbers and social profiles.

Why this matters: by Ahrefs' own account, a Business Profile is not only edited by its owner, because changes can come from Google or from competitors. A wrong phone number or opening hours on a map listing costs calls until somebody notices. For one location, checking the profile weekly in Google covers this. For twenty locations, an alert feed is the practical way to catch it.

Rank Tracker: measuring rankings where customers are

Local rankings change with the searcher's location, so a national position tells a local business very little. Ahrefs' Rank Tracker page lists "Location tracking. From country, to city, to ZIP code", mobile and desktop tracking, and 19 SERP features, with the local pack and AI Overviews among them. It also offers Share of Voice against competitors, a target URL per keyword with a warning when that page is outranked, and a flag when two of your URLs rank for one keyword.

Setting up a local tracking project

  1. Pick locations where your customers search from. A plumber serving three suburbs should track each suburb's city or ZIP code, not only the metro name.
  2. Track service phrases two ways. Add "emergency plumber" as people type it near you, and "emergency plumber [city]" for searches made from further away.
  3. Set a target URL for each keyword. Point "water heater repair" at the water heater page. When the home page ranks instead, the warning tells you the service page needs work.
  4. Watch the local pack column, not only the position. The map results and the organic list are separate results, so track local pack presence as its own number.
  5. Tag by location and service. Tags let you compare suburbs and spot the one where a competitor is gaining.
  6. Read the AI Overview column too. It shows which of your tracked searches now open with a generated answer.

How finely a tracker lets you set the location differs from tool to tool, and it matters more for a business with a small service area. Our comparison of local rank trackers ranks them on exactly that.

What Ahrefs does not change: how Google ranks local results

A tracker measures and a monitor protects. Neither one decides the ranking. Google's Business Profile help says "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google" and that local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity". So the work that moves local results is:

  • Relevance. The right primary category, complete services and a description that names what you actually do.
  • Distance. Fixed for a storefront. A service-area business sets its areas honestly.
  • Popularity. Reviews from real customers, mentions on local sites, and a website that ranks for the same services.

Ahrefs' other tools help with the last part. Site Explorer studies competitors' websites, including who links to them, and Keywords Explorer shows how people phrase a service. Our guide to Ahrefs tools by job covers what each one is for.

Is Ahrefs the right local SEO tool for you?

Ahrefs makes most sense for local work when you already use it for organic SEO, because local tracking and profile monitoring then sit beside your link and keyword data. It also fits an agency with many client profiles, where bulk edits and change alerts save hours. A single-location business with no other use for Ahrefs can do much of this with Google Business Profile and Search Console, both free, and add a paid tool once there are several locations to manage. Dedicated local SEO platforms often include citation and review tools, so compare on the jobs you actually need done.

The local question that now has a second answer

A growing share of people ask an assistant "who is a good plumber near me" instead of opening Maps, and the reply names a few businesses drawn from reviews, directories and local pages. That answer has no position to track, and it can differ from the local pack for the same search. Ahrefs itself has moved into this space with Brand Radar, which it describes as tracking a brand's visibility in LLMs. For a local business, AI Knows Us asks the assistants the questions your customers ask in your area and shows whether your business is one of the names in the reply.
