Automatic and automated SEO tools compared, and the three jobs worth automating

Automation in this market means three very different things sold under one word. Two of them are genuinely worth buying, one commits your brand to sentences nobody read, and here is how to tell which you are being sold.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Three products are sold as automated SEO and the word covers all of them, which is why buyers end up surprised. One automates measurement, one automates production, and one automates publishing changes to your live site. The risk profile goes up sharply from left to right and the marketing does not mention it. If you want the strategy question of what to automate and what to keep manual, that is answered separately and linked below; this page is about the products.

The criterion: what does the automation commit you to, and can you review it before it goes live? Checkable on every product, and it sorts the category.

The three kinds

KindExamples of what is publishedWorth it?
Automated measurement: scheduled crawls, alerts, reportsScreaming Frog puts scheduling and crawl comparison behind its licence and publishes a free limit of 500 URLs, read 21 October 2026. Sitebulb publishes Cloud for crawl automation, crawling at scale and automated reporting, and advertises an MCP server that brings crawl data into Claude and ChatGPT. Rank Math publishes an automatic broken link checker.Yes, and this is where almost all of the honest value is. A crawl you have to remember is not a process.
Automated production: briefs, drafts, internal link suggestionsRank Math publishes AI Link Genius for automated internal linking and Automated Keyword Linking that builds keyword to URL maps, read 21 October 2026. Yoast publishes internal linking suggestions in Premium.Conditionally. A suggestion you approve is a time saving. A draft published without a human reading it is a claim your business made by accident.
Automated change to the live site: tags, redirects, content rewritten in placeSeveral plugins and proxy products do this. Yoast publishes a redirect manager with bulk CSV handling in Premium.Only with a review step and a rollback. The failure mode is silent and site wide.

The three jobs worth automating, named

First, crawling and change detection, because the work is identical every time and the findings are facts rather than opinions. Second, data pulling and joining: Search Console rows, planner figures, rank readings, assembled on a schedule into one place. Third, validation: structured data checks, broken link checks, status code checks, all of which have a correct answer a machine can test.

What should stay manual is anything that commits your business to a statement. Which pages should exist, what claim a page makes, which numbers are quoted and the final read before publishing. That is not a conservative position, it is the same position every vendor in the list above takes in its own documentation when you read the detail.

The one automation that quietly causes the most damage

Automatic internal linking with no review. It is sold as a time saver and it is, and left unattended it produces pages linking to the wrong target on a keyword match, at scale, in a pattern that is hard to unpick later. If you turn it on, keep the suggestions as suggestions for the first month and read what it proposed. The same applies to automatic meta description generation: it is fine until it writes something about a product you stopped selling.

The one check none of these tools runs, and who sells it

Every tool on this page measures a search engine. None of them measures the other place your buyer now asks, which is an assistant: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each asker, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index a crawler can read to find out whose name came up. Nothing in the automation market watches it, and it is the one job where a schedule is genuinely required, because the answer is recomposed every time somebody asks.

AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else. We are not an SEO tool and we are not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler or a keyword index should buy one of the tools named above instead. What we do is ask your buyer question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. Our own figures, from the rendered text of our llms.txt read on 21 October 2026: one credit is one buyer question on one app once, most checks cost one credit and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. The published US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and that same file says SEO Start watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand harvest rather than an engine watch. The first tier that watches the five engines is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, so we are not going to convert it for you.

Where the tools on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on 21 October 2026, tracks prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all, and its page publishes an overage price of $0.020 per check and the cost of a Claude update at 8 checks, which is a level of unit disclosure worth holding every vendor to, us included. Semrush, whose SEO and AI search pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside the suite you may already be paying for, with 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day on its Starter tier. Moz now publishes AI Explorer, described on moz.com as showing what the top AI agents say about your brand. If you already pay one of those three, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it. We are the single purpose option for somebody who does not want a suite.

How to buy automation without buying a surprise

No competitor price table is reproduced on this page. What is quoted instead is the published limit that sets a tier, because a limit is the vendor's own statement of what you get and it does not move with the country you are reading from. That matters more than it sounds: on 21 October 2026 a fetch of one vendor's US pricing page from this machine returned Indian rupee prices, because the request left from an Indian address. A 200 response can still be the wrong page.

Ask three questions of any automated product: what does it change without asking, where is the log of what it changed, and how do I undo a week of it. A vendor with good answers to all three is selling automation. A vendor with no answer to the third is selling you a risk with a dashboard.

For the strategy side, which jobs to automate and which to keep with a person, and the stack that results: SEO testing tools compared, and what a test on a live site can actually show. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,169 page bodies in all, against 2,082 live pages, and 935 of them, 44.9 percent, had no inbound link from any of those bodies. That figure is an upper bound rather than a count. No other page on this site links to the one above.

Questions about automated SEO

Can SEO be fully automated?

The measurement can. The decisions cannot, because they commit your business to statements, and every vendor says as much in its own documentation.

Are automatic SEO plugins safe?

The measurement features are. The features that rewrite live pages need a review step and a rollback, and you should test them on one template before switching them on site wide.

What is the first thing to automate?

A scheduled crawl with a comparison against the last one. It is the highest value automation in this market and nobody markets it as exciting.

Do automated tools help with AI search?

Only if what they automate is the asking. A tool that automates publishing more pages does not tell you whether an assistant names you.

How do I audit what an automation did?

Crawl before and after and compare. If the product has no log, the crawl comparison is your log.
