Best content marketing platforms, the four jobs they do and the AI layer every one of them added this year

What separates a planning platform from a talent network, a DAM and an optimisation tool, with what each vendor published on its own site on 21 October 2026.

The best content marketing platform for you is decided by which job you are actually buying, and four different jobs are sold under the one name: planning and workflow, a managed network of writers, asset management with approvals, and optimisation scoring. Most shortlists go wrong because two of the three vendors on them do different jobs, so the demos are not comparable. Name the job first, then compare only the vendors that do it. There is now a fifth job on nearly every one of these sites, which is reporting whether AI assistants quote your content, and it is worth deciding on separately.

The four jobs sold as one category

The jobWhat you are buyingThe question that settles it
Planning and workflowA calendar, briefs, review and approval steps, publishing into your CMS, reporting per pieceHow many people need to approve a piece before it goes out
Managed talentA vetted pool of writers and editors, matched to your subject, managed by the vendorDo you have an editor in house, or are you buying one
Assets and governanceStorage, metadata, rights and the approved version of every assetHow often is the wrong version of something published
Optimisation scoringA score per draft against what currently ranks, plus briefs built from search resultsIs your bottleneck the writing or the ranking

A platform strong at the first job is often weak at the third, and a vendor leading with the second is selling people rather than software. The tooling that scores a draft is a separate purchase again, compared in SEO content writing tools ranked on whether the vendor says where its score comes from.

What each vendor published on 21 October 2026

Quoted as product claims and limits rather than as prices, because a price fetched from one country is not reliably the price an American buyer is shown.

  • Contently describes itself on contently.com as the content platform for regulated industries, since 2011. Its platform menu lists content marketing, a talent network it sizes at over 10,000 creators and 2,000 credentialed specialists, a talent API it describes as API plus MCP, an AI Studio for multi agent content creation, and a separate item called LLM Optimization, captioned rank in ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews. It also states that AI is off by default and opt in only, which matters if your legal team has a view on that.
  • Sitecore is the clearest case of a product renamed under its buyers. The URL for Content Hub now renders a page headed digital asset management, and the site's own answer to whether SitecoreAI DAM is the same as Sitecore Content Hub is that it is the asset management capability within SitecoreAI and that many customers know it by its earlier name. The same page states that Knowledge Studio from Scrunch, now a Sitecore company, makes approved assets readable to AI, and that it identifies where AI answers are supported, contradicted or missing. Scrunch was a standalone AI visibility vendor.
  • HubSpot lists Content Hub as its content marketing software, and lists separately, as its own product entry, AEO in beta, described as answer engine optimization tools that track and improve your brand's visibility in AI results. The tier detail is worth reading before a demo, and we have broken it out in what is in HubSpot Content Hub and how the tiers differ.
  • Optimizely is on most shortlists for this category, and its content marketing platform URL returned HTTP 404 when fetched on 21 October 2026. That records what the server did on that date and is not evidence that the product has gone. Ask for the current product name in writing before the demo.

Two of the four have put an AI answer feature in the main navigation and a third has acquired a company to supply it. That is the shape of the year in this category.

What actually sets a tier

Feature lists in this market are nearly identical, so compare the published limits instead. Four of them decide almost every renewal.

  • Seats, and which kind. Count your reviewers and your occasional approvers, not your writers. Approver seats are where the bill grows.
  • Workflow steps. Entry tiers often allow one review stage. If a piece needs legal, product and brand to sign it, you need the tier that allows three.
  • Storage and asset volume. Video is what pushes a team over an asset limit, not articles.
  • The integration you cannot work without. Your CMS, your analytics and your single sign on provider. Check each one by name on the plan you intend to buy, not on the plan above it.

The fifth job, and why it belongs in its own line

Every vendor above now reports something about AI answers. The feature is young, so ask the same four questions of whoever sells it to you: which engines are read, how many buyer questions are watched, how often the readings refresh, and whether that allowance is included or metered separately. A number with an undisclosed input is one you cannot argue with in a meeting, which is the opposite of what reporting is for.

There is a reason to buy that reading from someone who did not also produce the content: a platform scoring its own output has an interest in the score. AI Knows Us sells only the reading, which businesses ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews name when a buyer asks, and which pages each answer was built from. We are not a content marketing platform, we do not run your calendar and we do not store your assets, so buy the platform for the four jobs above and the reading separately. On the one criterion we can defend, which is publishing what a number is computed from, we put ourselves first: our question bank, our engine list and the raw exports behind our own claims are published, and a page like a proof page generated from the export rather than typed explains how that is produced. Where a rival beats us we say so. Profound publishes up to 9 answer engines tracked, plus SSO, SAML and SOC 2 compliance, on tryprofound.com/pricing read on 21 October 2026, against our five surfaces, and our own rendered pricing text carries no SSO, no SOC 2 and no white label at all. The cheapest plan of ours that reads all five surfaces is Growth at 299 dollars a month, and the 149 dollar tier below it publishes zero watched questions and zero credits, so it reads nothing.

Running the choice in two weeks

  1. Write down the job, in one sentence, and the number of approval steps a piece needs.
  2. Shortlist only vendors that lead with that job. Three is enough.
  3. Give each the same real brief and ask them to take one real piece from brief to publish in the trial.
  4. Ask each one, in writing, what its AI answer figure is computed from and how often it refreshes.
  5. Price the plan you will be on in a year, with the seats you will have then.

Questions about content marketing platforms

Do I need a content marketing platform at all?

Below roughly eight pieces a month with one reviewer, a shared calendar, your CMS and a brief template will do everything a platform would. Buy one when approvals or asset versions start costing you days.

What is the difference between a content marketing platform and a CMS?

A CMS stores and serves the published page. A content marketing platform manages the work before publication, the brief, the draft, the review and the schedule, then pushes the finished piece into the CMS.

Is a DAM the same as a content marketing platform?

No. A digital asset management system is the approved library of images, video and documents. Several vendors now sell both, which is why two products in one demo can look like one product.

Does a platform make the content better?

It makes the process repeatable, which usually shows up as fewer late pieces and fewer wrong versions. The quality comes from the brief and the writer, so protect the budget for those first.

Should the AI visibility reporting come from the same vendor as the platform?

It is convenient and it is one fewer invoice. A separate reading is easier to defend internally, because the party producing the content is not also marking it. Decide it on the four questions above rather than on the bundle.

The version of your content nobody on your team approved

Every platform above exists to control what gets published and in which version. The assistants now in front of your buyers do something no workflow covers: they read whatever they can reach, including pages your team retired, a partner's description of your product and a review site, then write their own summary of you. That summary is the first thing many buyers see and no approval step touches it. Worth knowing what it says, and which pages it came from, before you choose the platform that will produce the next hundred pieces. We publish our own gaps on the same principle: counting durable inbound links across 2,587 stored page bodies on 21 October 2026, 1,006 of our 2,501 live pages had none, including the writing tools comparison linked above.
