Best food and beverage marketing agency and advertising agency compared, and the retailer question that splits the shortlist in two

Two searches ask one supplier question. The answer depends entirely on where your volume is sold, and for one of the two halves we are the wrong supplier and say so.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

No firm is placed first on this page, because the question has two answers and they do not overlap. A food or drink brand selling ninety percent of its volume through grocery needs a supplier who can work inside a retailer's systems. A brand selling direct, or a restaurant group selling to a person standing in front of it, needs something entirely different. Pick the wrong half and the agency will optimise the ten percent of your business that is easiest to measure.

The question that splits the shortlist

Ask it before any call: what percentage of your volume goes through a retailer you do not own.

If the answer is most of it, you are in trade. The supplier that moves your business is the one with a working relationship inside the retailer: retail media networks, digital shelf, search inside the retailer's own site, promotion mechanics, planogram and category story work. Ask which retailer platforms it works in by name, who at that retailer it deals with, and what it can get done there that your own team cannot. A shop that answers with audience targeting has told you it is a media buyer wearing a commerce label.

If the answer is little or none, you are in demand. Direct to consumer, subscription, restaurant, bar, or a brand with its own retail. Now the work is brand, creative, paid social, local search, reviews and the thing that gets somebody to walk in or click buy. A trade agency is the wrong supplier and will be expensive at it.

Most food and beverage brands are somewhere between and brief as though they are one or the other. Naming the split in the first paragraph of the brief is the single most useful thing a marketing director can do here.

The four suppliers answering this search

The shopper and commerce agency. Lives inside the retailer. Moves units. The supplier most packaged food brands underbuy.

The brand and creative shop. Positioning, packaging, the thing that makes the pack recognisable in the four seconds a shopper gives it. Essential, slow, and it does not fix distribution.

The performance and direct to consumer agency. Paid social, marketplace advertising, subscription funnels. Right if a real share of volume is sold direct; expensive misdirection if it is not.

The advertising agency in the media sense. Television, radio, outdoor, sponsorship. Bought on audience and frequency, and the supplier most people searching for a food and beverage advertising agency actually have in mind. Note that these are usually general agencies with food clients rather than food specialists, and that is fine.

The four things to settle, since nobody publishes figures

Which number the agency is paid against. Units, velocity per store, distribution points gained, or marketing qualified leads. In trade the only numbers that matter are velocity and distribution, and an agency reporting impressions in a trade engagement is reporting the wrong thing well.

Who handles the regulated copy. Nutrition claims, health claims, allergen statements, alcohol marketing rules and, in several categories, state level restrictions. The brand carries that risk, not the agency. Name the reviewer in the contract.

Who owns the photography and the pack artwork files. Including the raw files and the layered artwork. Food photography is expensive and is routinely re-shot because nobody could find the originals.

Whether sampling and trial are in scope. Food and drink is a trial first category: somebody has to taste it. Sampling is a physical operation with crews and permits, and it is either in the scope with a budget line or it is nobody's job.

For the packaged goods version of this shortlist, including the retailer relationship that decides which agency you can actually use, this site carries best CPG marketing agencies compared. Measured on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to that one, out of 2,454 live pages of which 987 have no inbound internal link by the same measure, 40.2 percent and an upper bound because a link can only be counted inside a body we hold. The denominator moved by 49 pages during the six hours this page was researched, so treat both figures as dated rather than current.

Where we fit, which is one half of this page and not the other

This is the unusual case where the honest answer depends on which half of the split you are in, so it is worth being exact rather than general.

If your volume goes through grocery, AI Knows Us is the wrong supplier and we are recommending ourselves nowhere. A shopper standing in an aisle choosing between two packs in four seconds is not asking an assistant anything. The decision is physical, the levers are distribution, price, pack and shelf position, and nothing we measure touches any of them. We do not run shopper marketing, retail media or packaging, and a brand that bought us hoping to move velocity would have bought the wrong thing.

If you sell direct, or you are a restaurant or bar group, there is one row we do cover. A person deciding where to eat, or which brand of a product to order online, now asks an assistant and gets two or three names back. There is no impression and no click, so nothing in your reporting has seen it. We put that question to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews with your brand name kept out of the question, and report which brands get named. Read at aiknowsus.com/pricing on 23 October 2026, Growth is $299 a month for 100 buyer questions, 1,200 scheduled answers and all five apps, and a Claude check uses 3 credits "because Claude costs us more to run" while most use one. The published floor, SEO Start at $149, watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines and buys none of this.

Two limits even on that half. For a single site restaurant wanting one look first, BrightLocal's free checker beats paying us: read on 21 October 2026 it gives "Check up to 5 prompts" against one location on your choice of "Google AI Mode, or ChatGPT" for an email address and no card, and we publish no free check at all. And our pricing page contradicts itself on multi brand coverage, describing the Agency plan as 10 client brands while its comparison table's "More than one business" row reads "No" for every plan including Agency. A house of five drink brands should get that confirmed in writing rather than take either reading from us.

Questions food and drink brands ask about agencies

Can one agency do trade and brand? A few genuinely can and the test is whether they will name the person doing each part and split the fee by discipline. A single blended rate across both usually means the trade half is subcontracted.

Is a food specialist worth the premium? For regulated copy, retailer relationships and sampling logistics, usually yes. For media buying skill alone, a strong generalist is often equal and cheaper.

How should we measure a sampling programme? Trial conversion at the point of sampling and repeat purchase afterwards, agreed before the crews go out. Attendance counts are an activity measure and will be offered as a result.

Does any specialist publish prices? None this research reached on 21 October 2026. A published figure in this category would be a differentiator rather than the norm.
