Best local SEO audit tools compared, and the checks that need your own login rather than a tool

A local audit covers four things, and a tool can do two of them. The other two need access to your Google Business Profile, which is why the first hour of a local audit costs nothing and uses no software at all.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The criterion on this page, applied to everybody including us. A local audit produces four findings, and only two of them can come from outside your account. Rank a tool on which of the four it can actually produce without your login, because that tells you what you are paying for and what you were always going to have to do yourself.

The four parts of a local audit, and who can see each one

CheckWhat it answersNeeds your login?
One. Map pack position by pointWhere you rank across an area rather than at one address. Position changes with the searcher's distance, so a single local rank figure is an average of something that varies by half a mile.No. A tool can query from many points and draw a grid.
Two. Listing presence and consistencyWhether your name, address and phone number match across the directories that feed the map ecosystem.No. This is public and it is the other thing a tool genuinely does well.
Three. Profile completeness and what Google says about itWhich categories, attributes, services and hours are set, whether the profile is suspended or limited, and what Google's own performance report says about calls, direction requests and searches.Yes. No external tool can read your Business Profile insights, and this is the half of the audit that usually finds the money.
Four. Review volume, recency and response rateWhether reviews are arriving and whether anybody is answering them.Partly. The counts are public, the response workflow is in your account.

ToolWhat its own page says it doesWhich of the four
BrightLocalbrightlocal.com publishes a Local Search Grid that will "Visualize how you rank against competitors across map locations", a Citation Builder to "Build and clean up listings on the sites that influence local search visibility" at "from $2/citation", a platform capability to "See how visible your business is in local search, right down to the neighborhood level", Manage Listings to "Keep your business information accurate and consistent everywhere customers search", and review monitoring to "Monitor, manage, and improve reviews". Its all-in-one platform is published "from $31/mo" and managed services "from $1,299/mo". It also publishes three genuinely free tools: a Local SERP Checker to "View Google search results from any location", a Rank Fluctuation Monitor with "Daily, weekly, or urgent-only alerts", and a Google Review Link Generator. One, two and the public half of four. Nothing on the page we read says any tool requires connecting your own Business Profile account.
Google Business Profile itselfFree. Its performance report publishes your searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks, and its own interface shows every category, attribute and service field that is empty.Three, and only this. It is the only source for the half of the audit that sits inside your account.
Google Search ConsoleFree for any property you can verify. Sixteen months of query and page data for your site, which is the organic half a local audit also has to cover.Context for all four. Every paid tool estimates part of what it reports directly.
SE Rankingseranking.com/pricing.html publishes Core at 10 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords daily and 5 domains for GEO research, Growth at 30 projects and 5,000 keywords daily, a "free 14-day trial" with "No credit card required", and white label behind an "Agency Pack" add-on at +$69.00/mo, annual billing only, with 30 client seats. One and two, as part of a general suite rather than a local specialist.
MozCould not be read. moz.com would not serve this machine at all on 21 October 2026, so no Moz figure appears on this page.Unverified, therefore unquoted.

So the ranking, on the stated criterion

Your own Google Business Profile first, and it is free. It is the only source for one of the four checks and it is the check that most often explains a bad result: a missing primary category, an unset service area, a suspended profile, hours that have been wrong since a holiday. Spend the first hour of any local audit here, before buying anything.

BrightLocal second, and first among the paid tools. On this page's criterion it publishes the clearest description of what it does for checks one, two and four, it publishes a starting figure for the platform and a per-unit figure for citations, and it publishes three free tools that answer real questions without an account. No other vendor in this set is a local specialist with that much on the page.

SE Ranking third, as the general suite option. If local is one of several jobs you have, its published allowances are generous and its trial terms are the clearest here. If local is the only job, a specialist is the better fit.

Moz is unranked because it would not serve us, which is a measurement failure rather than a verdict.

The local audit in six steps, in the order that finds things

One. Open the profile and read every field. Primary category, additional categories, services, attributes, hours, holiday hours, service area, website link. Most audits end here with three fixes worth more than the tool.

Two. Read the profile's own performance report. Calls and direction requests, not impressions.

Three. Run a grid, not a rank check. One number for a whole city is an average of a thing that varies street by street, and acting on the average is how a business concludes local SEO does not work.

Four. Check the listings that feed the ecosystem, not every directory that exists. A handful of sources matter and the long tail is noise sold as a package.

Five. Count reviews by month, not in total. A hundred reviews with none this year reads worse than thirty arriving steadily.

Six. Only now open a tool, and only for the checks above that you could not do by hand.

The fifth check nobody's audit template has yet

Someone looking for a local business increasingly asks an assistant rather than a map. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews answer "who should I use near me" by composing a reply and naming some businesses, and that exchange leaves no listing, no position and no record to audit. A grid tool cannot find it, because it is not in the map pack.

AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else, and we are not in the ranking above, because somebody who needs a grid and a citation audit should buy BrightLocal. We are not a local SEO tool and we do not read map positions. What we do is put the buyer's question to all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. From the rendered text of our pricing page, read 21 October 2026: "One credit is one buyer question, asked on one AI app, once", "Most checks use one credit", "A Claude check uses 3, because Claude costs us more to run". From our llms.txt the same day: SEO Start at $149 a month watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand-harvest tier rather than an engine watch, and Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month is the cheapest plan that reads all five surfaces. The "Businesses covered" row on our pricing page shows 1 on most plans and 10 on Agency, which matters if you have several locations under separate names.

Where a rival beats us on exactly this, plainly. BrightLocal publishes a free Local AI Visibility Checker that will "Check your business against ChatGPT and Google AI Mode" and gives a "Local AI Visibility Score", plus a paid Local AI Visibility Tracker to "See how your business appears across ChatGPT and Google's AIs". We publish no free check of any kind. If you want a first reading on this without paying anybody, start there. Two honest differences: the BrightLocal page we read names ChatGPT and Google AI Mode and does not mention AI Overviews, Perplexity or Claude, and AI Mode is a surface we do not read at all. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read the same day, covers seven surfaces including AI Mode and Copilot and publishes "$0.020/check" with "Claude consumes 8 checks per update".

For the position half of the job, where how precisely a tool lets you set the search point is the whole difference between a useful grid and a misleading average: local rank trackers compared, ranked on how precisely each one lets you set the search point. On 21 October 2026 we read 2,411 page bodies on this site against 2,325 live pages and 971 of them, 41.8 percent, carried no inbound link from any body we could read, which is an upper bound rather than a count. We measured that target specifically: no other page on this site links to that one.

Questions about local SEO audit tools

Do I need a tool to audit one location?

No. One location is an hour in the profile plus a free SERP check from the right postcode. A tool earns its place at several locations or several clients.

How many citations actually matter?

A short list of data aggregators and the major directories for your trade. A package promising hundreds is selling volume, and consistency across a few sources beats presence on many.

Why does my rank differ from my client's?

Because you are standing somewhere else. Proximity is a ranking factor in the map pack, so two people in the same town see different results, and that is why a grid is the honest unit.

Can a tool fix a suspended profile?

No. Reinstatement runs through Google's own process with your own documents, and no subscription shortens it.
