Best online and internet marketing experts compared, and the one deliverable to require before you pay
Expert is not a credential and nobody awards it. Here are the four kinds of person the word covers, what each one can and cannot carry alone, and the single document that tells you which one you are talking to.

Nobody awards the title "online marketing expert". There is no exam and no register, so the word tells you nothing on its own. What it hides is four different people with four different limits.
The four people behind the word
One, the channel operator. Deep in one thing, usually paid search, paid social, email or search. They will improve the channel they know and they will not build you a plan across channels, because that is not the job they do. Hire them when you know which channel is underperforming.
Two, the generalist consultant. Broad across channels, hands off the tools. They produce a plan, a budget split and a measurement frame, then somebody else executes. Worth real money when you have budget and no idea where to point it, and a waste when you already know and need the work done.
Three, the fractional head of marketing. A senior operator for one or two days a week who owns the number rather than a task. The useful test here is whether they will be accountable for a metric in writing. If the engagement has deliverables but no number, you have bought a consultant at a fractional executive price.
Four, the agency in one person's clothing. You meet an expert and the work is done by a team you have not met. This is not automatically bad, and for anything that needs design, development and media buying together it is often the only way to get all three. It is only bad when nobody told you.
The one deliverable to require before you pay
Ask for a written account of a problem they diagnosed that turned out to be something other than what the client first said it was, with the numbers before and after and the reason the first diagnosis was wrong.
That request does more work than any portfolio. It cannot be answered from a template. It separates somebody who has run marketing from somebody who has run a marketing playbook, because only the first kind has been wrong in public and fixed it. A real operator usually has this story ready and enjoys telling it. Somebody who does not have one has either never owned a number or has never examined a result closely enough to find a surprise in it.
Two further checks that take five minutes each. Ask who will do the work, by name, and what happens to the engagement if that person is unavailable for a month. Ask which three numbers they will report every month and which one of those three they would be judged on.
What no single expert can carry, whatever they charge
An individual is a single point of failure by construction. That is not a flaw to be negotiated away, it is the shape of the purchase, and it only becomes a problem when the engagement pretends otherwise. The honest version is to scope an individual for work that can pause, and to scope anything that cannot pause, such as a live advertising account or an on call technical responsibility, to a team.
The second thing most experts genuinely cannot carry is the surface nobody has owned yet, and it is worth being specific about it rather than vague.
Where we come into this, and what we are not
When a buyer in your market asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews who to buy from, they get names. Two or three of them. If your business is not among those names, you did not lose a ranking position, you were never in the consideration set, and the buyer who never arrived leaves nothing in any report your expert reads. That is why this gap persists quietly even under good marketing people.
AI Knows Us measures exactly that and nothing else. We are not an expert for hire, we are not an agency and we do not run your channels, so we are not a substitute for anybody above. We are the measurement a marketing expert should be held to on this one surface, and the thing to buy when they cannot show it.
On the criterion we will apply to ourselves as well, which is what a vendor publishes that a buyer can verify before paying, here is our own position stated against us as well as for us. Our ladder at aiknowsus.com/llms.txt, read 21 October 2026, publishes Growth at $299 a month with 100 buyer questions watched, 1,600 credits and all five engines. That is the cheapest plan we publish that reads all five surfaces. SEO Start at $149 publishes 0 buyer questions, 0 credits and 0 engines, so anybody quoting $149 as the entry price for answer engine measurement, including anybody quoting it from us, is quoting the wrong tier. Our pricing page now renders six currencies, with SEO Start at Rs 4,999, $149, GBP 119, EUR 139, AU$229 and CA$209.
And here is the part a buyer should know and most vendors leave out. Our rendered pricing text contains no SSO, no white label, no SOC 2, no ISO certification and no DPA. We checked that on 21 October 2026 on our own page. If you are a procurement led buyer who needs those, we do not currently publish them and you should ask us directly rather than assume.

If the hire you actually need is narrower than this page, two live comparisons go deeper. For the SEO version of the same decision, including the one credential that is genuinely checkable, see best SEO experts and expert SEO services compared. For the four specialisms that hide behind one job title, see best digital marketing specialists compared. We link to that second one deliberately. When we measured inbound links across 2,286 stored page bodies on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to that one, and 939 of our 2,200 live pages were in the same position, 42.7 percent, an upper bound.
A correction to the link note above, dated
When this page was written on 21 October 2026 we measured that no other page on this site linked to best digital marketing specialists compared, and that was true at the moment we measured it. Within the same day another page on this site published a link to it, so that page is no longer the zero inbound orphan this page describes, and the sentence above overstates it. We are correcting it here rather than quietly editing the sentence, because a measurement is only worth printing if the date and the revision are printed with it. The site wide figure moved in the same window, from 939 of 2,200 live pages with no readable inbound link to 954 of 2,243, which is 42.5 percent and still an upper bound.
