Best SEO experts and expert SEO services compared, and the one credential a buyer can actually check

Expert is an unregulated word in this market. Three different jobs hide behind it, and only one of the three can be verified before you pay. Here is the check, and the surface none of them watches.

There is no licence for SEO. No exam, no register, no body that can strike anybody off. So "expert" on this market means whatever the person writing it wants it to mean, and the buyer is left holding the verification problem.

This page separates the three jobs that share the title, gives the one credential that can be checked from outside, and names where each kind of expert stops.

Three different jobs, one title

The technical expert. Crawling, indexing, rendering, site speed, architecture, log files, structured data. The work is diagnostic and it is the most checkable of the three, because the findings are either reproducible on your site or they are not.

The content and authority expert. What to write, in what order, and how to get other sites to mention it. Slower to show, harder to attribute, and the part most likely to be outsourced under you.

The local expert. Google Business Profile, reviews, service area pages, citations in directories. Different mechanism, different tooling, and a genuinely different skill from the first two.

An "expert SEO agency" is usually one person from each of the three plus an account manager. That is a reasonable thing to buy. What it is not is a single expert, and the price reflects the team rather than the title.

The one credential that is checkable before you pay

Ask for one thing: a site they worked on, the specific change they made, the date it shipped, and the before and after measurement with the measurement tool named. Then check the part you can check from outside. A page that did not exist in March and exists now is verifiable from an archive. A structured data change is verifiable with Google's own rich results test. A claimed traffic figure is not verifiable by you at all, which is why it should carry the least weight in your decision.

Everything else on a credentials slide is softer than it looks. Certifications in this field are issued by vendors who sell training. Conference talks measure invitation, not results. Follower counts measure publishing, not practice. None of that is dishonest, and none of it is a check.

Google's own guidance is worth reading before the first call, partly because it is free and partly because it is dated. The SEO starter guide at developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide was stamped "Last updated 2025-12-10 UTC" when we read it on 21 October 2026 and now carries its own section on optimizing for generative AI. Moz's free beginner's guide at moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo covers the same ground at more length. An expert who disagrees with either should be able to say why in one sentence.

What an expert costs in the United States, and what sets the number

Consulting in this market is usually sold by the hour, and the most senior hours buy the technical diagnosis rather than the ongoing work. A monthly arrangement with one experienced individual is usually a retainer for a set number of hours, and its size is set by how many hours they will commit rather than by the brand on the invoice. Ask for the rate, the hours and what you receive in writing.

Three things move the figure more than seniority does. Competition in your category, because a national software market needs more work than a single city trade. Site size, because 200 URLs and 200,000 URLs are different jobs. And whether anyone on your side can ship a change, because an expert who cannot deploy is an expert who writes tickets.

Where every one of these three experts currently stops

All three jobs above optimise for a list of links. None of them, as standard, watches whether an assistant names you in a written answer. That is now a separate measurement with separate tooling, and the tool vendors have already split it out: Ahrefs sells Brand Radar beside its SEO suite, SE Ranking ships a separate AI Search Toolkit with an AI Overviews tracker, an AI Mode tracker, a ChatGPT tracker and a Gemini tracker, read at seranking.com/features.html on 21 October 2026, and Moz sells AI search and visibility as its own product line.

AI Knows Us is not an SEO expert and does not sell SEO hours. What we sell is the answer to one question your technical expert is not being paid to answer: when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews who to buy from, in a question that never names you, does your name come out? We measure that on all five surfaces, report who was named instead, and run the content and placement work that changes it.

A credit is one buyer question put to one app once. A Claude check costs three credits because the Anthropic API with live web search is the expensive one; most checks cost one.

Our own ladder is published in full at aiknowsus.com/llms.txt, which is served as plain text, so a crawler reads it without running any JavaScript. Read on 21 October 2026 it carries eight self serve plans with the limit that sets each one: SEO Start $149 a month with no buyer questions watched and a monthly demand harvest, Growth $299 with 100 buyer questions watched, 1,200 scheduled answers a month and five engines, SEO Scale $699, Scale $599 with 300 questions and 3,500 scheduled answers, Inbound $1,099 with 200 questions, Outbound $1,299 with 30 questions and four engines, Agency $1,299 with 80 questions and 12,300 credits, and Everything $1,799 with 300 questions and 3,600 scheduled answers. A top up of 1,000 credits is $49. $149 is the published United States floor. Managed GEO is listed at Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month with a three month minimum and is published in rupees only, so we quote it in rupees rather than converting it ourselves.

One thing this page said about our own site was wrong, and a buyer would have hit it, so it is corrected here, dated 21 October 2026. The dollar prices are not added in the browser: a crawler request that day returned the dollar ladder and the rupee ladder in the same server response, 24 dollar figures and 31 rupee figures. The dollar figures above come from the plain text file, which is the server rendered source.

Two rules sit behind every number we publish, and both are on the methodology page. The buyer question never names the business being measured, because a question that contains the brand name produces an answer that contains the brand name. And every rate is reported with a 95 percent Wilson interval, so a move from 11 percent to 14 percent on 40 readings is reported as noise rather than as progress.

Where rivals are ahead of us on this criterion, here it is. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on ahrefs.com/brand-radar on 21 October 2026, names seven surfaces against our five: ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. It also publishes its own per engine cost in plain language, "Claude consumes 8 checks per update", and an overage rate of $0.020 a check, which is more disclosure of unit economics than we publish. Profound publishes "Up to 9 Answer Engines tracked" and "SSO/SAML + SOC 2 compliance" on its enterprise tier at tryprofound.com/pricing, read the same day. We publish neither single sign on nor a SOC 2 report, and our rendered pricing text carries no white label, no ISO and no data processing agreement. Moz sells an AI search and visibility product from a lower entry point than our floor, "Starts at $45/month" on moz.com/products, read the same day.

Ranking ourselves on the same criterion this page uses for experts, which is what can be verified from outside before payment, we put ourselves first on one narrow and checkable thing: of the vendors read on 21 October 2026 we were the only one publishing the price, the questions watched, the credits, the engines and the check cadence for every tier in a server rendered plain text file. Peec AI publishes the limits without a rendered price. Profound and Similarweb publish no self serve price. On engine count and on compliance we are behind, as the paragraph above says.

If you want the deliverable list to demand from a one off diagnostic rather than an ongoing arrangement, we keep a separate page on what to require in an SEO audit before you pay. Exactly one other page on this site links to that one: it had none when we measured earlier on 21 October 2026, and one by the time we re-measured the same day across the 2,072 of 2,141 live pages whose text we can read. We are publishing the corrected figure rather than the one we wrote first.

What buyers ask about hiring an SEO expert

Is one expert enough, or do I need an agency? One is enough for diagnosis and for direction. Execution across technical, content and local needs more hands than one person has.

When can I tell whether they are any good? The technical work can be checked as soon as the findings are delivered, because they are reproducible immediately. Content and authority work is read in Search Console impressions and positions, and when it moves depends on competition, your offer and your budget.

What should I refuse to sign? Any clause that promises a position, any arrangement where the reporting comes only from the supplier's own dashboard, and any scope that does not name who deploys the changes.
