Best search engine marketing software and SEM platforms compared, ranked on the limit that sets each tier

SEM software is priced on the money you manage, not on seats, and most vendors do not render a price at all. Here is how to work out your own tier before you contact anybody, and the surface none of these tools can bid on.

Search engine marketing software is the one marketing category where you can work out your own tier before you talk to a vendor, because almost all of it is priced on the money you manage rather than on features or seats.

The four things sold as SEM software

One, the platform's own console, which is free. Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising both give you full campaign management at no charge. Every paid tool in this category sits on top of that and has to justify itself against free. This is the comparison most shortlists skip and it is the most important one.

Two, bid and budget management. Rules, automated bid changes, budget pacing and alerts, run more often than a person would. This is the core of the paid category.

Three, cross platform reporting. One view across Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and the rest. Bought by people who manage several accounts or report to somebody who will not log into five consoles.

Four, research and competitive intelligence. Auction and keyword data about the market rather than about your account. Priced per seat and per data allowance, and it behaves like a different product from two and three.

The limit that sets your tier, with a worked example

Here is the stated criterion for this page, applied to every vendor. Rank on the limit the vendor publishes as the thing that sets your tier, because that limit is checkable and the price often is not.

Optmyzr is the clearest published example of how the category prices itself, so we read it at optmyzr.com/pricing on 21 October 2026 and quoted it exactly.

Its pricing page asks "What's your monthly ad spend?" and offers bands of 25K, 50K, 75K, 150K, 250K, 350K, 500K and 500K+. Its Enterprise tier is described as "Unlimited Ad Accounts*" subject to a "Fair usage policy". The platforms it lists supporting are "Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Amazon Ads, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, and Yahoo! Japan Ads".

And here is the part a buyer should know before planning around a number. Its Essentials and Premium plans did not render a price for us at all. Both appear with a "/Mo billed" label and no figure beside it. The currency on the spend bands is not stated on the page either. We are reporting both of those as absences, not filling them in.

So the useful planning move is this. You already know your monthly ad spend. Find your band in that list before you book a demo, and the conversation starts from a number you brought rather than one you are handed. If your spend is at the bottom band, note what a few percent of improvement is worth in absolute dollars, and compare that to any fee. The category gets more defensible the further up the bands you go, which is exactly why it is priced this way.

On the free baseline, Google publishes no minimum spend. We read business.google.com/us/google-ads/ on 21 October 2026, reached by a 301 redirect from the old ads.google.com home page, and it says only that "New advertisers will receive an ad credit after meeting the minimum spend requirement for the selected offer", without stating the requirement. Its offer amounts render as unfilled template placeholders rather than dollar figures. The campaign types it names are Performance Max, Search, Shopping, Video Reach, Video View, Demand Gen and App. So there is no published floor, and the console itself costs nothing.

The three checks before you buy anything here

One, which platforms you actually run. A tool that covers six networks is worth no more than a tool that covers two if you only run two. Match the list to your accounts, not to the longest list.

Two, whether the automation writes or only recommends. A tool that suggests changes needs a person to action them, and a tool that makes them needs guardrails. Those are different operating models and different amounts of your time. Ask which it is and who is accountable when a rule misfires.

Three, what happens at renewal if your spend drops. You are on a spend band. Ask in writing whether the band moves down as well as up.

The surface none of these tools can bid on

Every product above operates inside an auction. You pay, you get a position, and the mechanics are legible because somebody is selling inventory.

When a buyer asks an assistant who to buy from, there is no auction. The assistant names two or three businesses, no slot was sold, and no bid would have changed it. That is not a gap in SEM software. It is a place SEM software structurally cannot reach, because there is nothing there to buy.

AI Knows Us measures that one thing. We are not an SEM tool. We do not manage bids, we do not touch your ad accounts, and we should not appear on a shortlist with anything in categories one to four above. What we do is put the buying questions your market asks to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and report which names come back, so the surface stops being invisible.

And because this page is about published limits, here is ours on the same standard. Our ladder at aiknowsus.com/llms.txt, read 21 October 2026, publishes the limit next to the price: Growth at $299 a month, 100 buyer questions watched, 1,600 credits, all five engines. Scale at $599, 300 questions, 4,667 credits, five engines. Outbound at $1,299, 30 questions, 520 credits, and four engines rather than five, because it does not include Claude, which is a limit we would rather print than have a buyer discover. Our SEO Start at $149 publishes 0 questions, 0 credits and 0 engines and does not read answer engines at all, so the entry price for this measurement from us is $299 and not $149.

Unlike most of the category above, every one of those figures renders on our own page before you speak to anybody. That is the one axis on which we would claim to lead here, and it is a narrow one.

If you would rather buy the work than the software, the agency version of this decision, including the fee model that decides it, is at best SEM agencies and search marketing agencies compared. We link to it deliberately. When we measured inbound links across 2,286 stored page bodies on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to that one, and 939 of our 2,200 live pages were in the same position, 42.7 percent, an upper bound.
