Best SEO software for Mac compared, on what each vendor publishes about macOS

Most SEO tools are web apps, so the platform question only bites on the desktop crawlers, and that is exactly where the vendors differ. Here is which ones publish a macOS build, which publish a Mac caveat, and which say nothing at all.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The criterion on this page, applied to everybody including us. Does the vendor's own page say macOS, and for which tier? That is the whole question, it is checkable in one reading, and it is the one thing a Mac owner cannot find out from a feature grid.

Why most of this category is not a platform question at all

Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Ubersuggest, Frase and Surfer are web applications. They run in a browser and the operating system is irrelevant. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are the same. So for perhaps nine of every ten jobs a Mac owner has, the answer to "what SEO software runs on a Mac" is all of it.

The platform question bites on one job: the desktop crawler. A crawler runs on your own machine, uses your own memory and bandwidth, and reaches staging sites and password-protected builds that a cloud crawler finds awkward. That is where a macOS build either exists or does not.

The desktop crawlers, on what each page publishes

ToolmacOS statement, read 21 October 2026Published ceiling
Screaming Frog SEO SpiderExplicit and complete. The page's own heading reads "Windows, macOS and Linux", its metadata says "Windows, macOS and Ubuntu", and it publishes separate downloads for macOS on Apple Silicon and on Intel, alongside Windows and Ubuntu and Fedora packages."The free version is restricted to crawling up to 500 URLs in a single crawl". Paid is "Unlimited*", with the page adding that the maximum "is dependent on allocated memory and storage".
SitebulbPartial, and the partiality matters. The FAQ says Sitebulb Pro "runs on Windows or Mac". The page does not mention Mac for its Lite tier or for Cloud. Cloud is browser based so the question is moot there; Lite's silence is the gap to ask about before buying the cheaper desktop tier."10,000 URLs per audit" on Lite, "500,000 URLs per audit" on Pro, and the FAQ says Pro can be raised to 2 million depending on the user's machine. JavaScript crawling is listed under "All plans get".
SeoTools for ExcelNot addressed. The only platform signal on seotoolsforexcel.com is a testimonial from Majestic's Dixon Jones reading "If you use Excel on Windows, SEOTools for Excel has no equal." Treat it as a Windows product until the vendor states otherwise.None published, and no free tier published either.
AhrefsNot applicable and worth confirming anyway: ahrefs.com/pricing does not mention macOS, Mac or a desktop app anywhere, because there is nothing to install."100,000 crawl credits" on Lite up to "1,500,000 crawl credits" on Advanced, with "1 user included" on each tier.
Oncrawl, Lumar, seoClarityAll cloud. oncrawl.com publishes "+300M URLs crawled (JS)" and "+500M log lines processed daily"; lumar.io/platform describes crawling "built for enterprise-scale websites" with no ceiling; seoclarity.net/platform publishes "unlimited crawls" and "no limits on the number of crawled pages or crawl projects". None has a platform question.See the figures beside each.

So the ranking, on the stated criterion

Screaming Frog first, and it is not close. It is the only desktop crawler here that publishes an Apple Silicon build and an Intel build separately, states the supported systems in its own heading, and publishes an exact free ceiling you can check against your site today. For a Mac owner this is the default answer.

Sitebulb second, with the caveat written down rather than smoothed over: Mac is published for Pro and not for Lite, so if the cheaper desktop tier is what you were planning on, confirm it before paying.

SeoTools for Excel is not ranked for Mac, because the page does not claim macOS and the only platform statement on it is about Windows. A Mac owner who wants spreadsheet SEO should use the Search Console API into Google Sheets instead, which needs no add-in and no operating system at all.

Everything cloud-based is outside the ranking because the question does not apply, which is the most useful single sentence on this page.

One contradiction on the page we ranked first, reported rather than smoothed over

The Screaming Frog page says in prose that "the crawl configuration, saving of crawls, and advanced features such as JavaScript rendering" are restricted in the free version, and that the licence "allows you to save crawls, and opens up the spider's configuration options and advanced features". Its own feature table on the same page lists JavaScript rendering, crawl configuration, saved crawls, scheduling and structured data validation on the free side, with the 500 URL crawl limit as the only stated difference. Both readings are from that page on 21 October 2026. Install the free build and check the feature you need, which on a Mac takes five minutes and settles it.

Two Mac-specific practicalities nobody publishes

Memory, not CPU, decides how large a crawl finishes. Screaming Frog says so itself. A machine with 16GB will go a long way further than one with 8GB on the same site, and the storage mode setting matters more than the processor.

Gatekeeper will stop an unsigned build on first run. Both tools above ship signed, and if you reach for something more obscure in this category, expect a security prompt and read it rather than clicking through it.

The measurement that has no platform at all

Every crawler above runs somewhere, on your machine or the vendor's. The surface none of them reaches is the one where the answer is composed rather than retrieved: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews write a reply for each person who asks, name some businesses and not others, and store no index anywhere.

AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else, and we are not in the ranking above, because a Mac owner who came here for a crawler should download Screaming Frog. We are not a desktop tool and we have nothing to install, which means the platform question does not apply to us either. What we do is put your buyer's question to all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. From the rendered text of our pricing page, read 21 October 2026: "One credit is one buyer question, asked on one AI app, once", "Most checks use one credit", "A Claude check uses 3, because Claude costs us more to run". From our llms.txt the same day: SEO Start at $149 a month watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand-harvest tier rather than an engine watch, and Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers is the cheapest plan that reads all five surfaces.

Where the tools on this page beat us. Screaming Frog's free version costs nothing and ours costs $149 at its floor, and on a page about free desktop software that is the relevant comparison. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read 21 October 2026, publishes "1 check per platform, location and update" at "$0.020/check" with "Claude consumes 8 checks per update", and reads AI Mode and Copilot, two surfaces we do not read at all.

A note on reading vendor pages from any machine, Mac or otherwise: on 21 October 2026 moz.com would not serve us at all and seoptimer.com returned 403, so neither appears above. A 403 is never evidence of absence, and the same host can answer 404 on one path and 200 on another within a minute, which seranking.com did.

For the question of which research question each tool is actually entitled to answer, which decides the stack more than the operating system does: SEO research tools compared, and the research question each one answers. On 21 October 2026 we read 2,411 page bodies on this site against 2,325 live pages and 971 of them, 41.8 percent, carried no inbound link from any body we could read, which is an upper bound rather than a count. We measured that target specifically: no other page on this site links to that one.

Questions about SEO software for Mac

Is Screaming Frog native on Apple Silicon?

Its own download page publishes separate macOS builds for Apple Silicon and for Intel, so yes, and take the Apple Silicon one.

Do I need a Windows machine for SEO work?

For the crawlers, no. The one category where Windows still wins is Excel add-ins, and the Search Console API into Google Sheets replaces most of what they do.

Will a cloud crawler do everything a desktop one does?

Almost, except for staging sites behind a login or a firewall, which is where a desktop crawl on your own network is simply easier.

How much memory do I need?

Neither vendor publishes a figure, and both say the ceiling depends on your machine. For sites past about a hundred thousand URLs, plan on using the database storage mode rather than buying more memory.
