Best tool to track Google AI Overviews mentions: it is a search result rather than a chat, and two vendors say so in their own price lists
Rankscale files AI Overviews under GUI engines, next to Copilot, and apart from the model endpoints it calls API engines. Depra publishes that it reads a Google results page for AI Overviews and consumer interfaces for the chat surfaces. That distinction is why location, not model choice, is the thing to check on this surface. Read on each vendor's own page, 20 October 2026.

Google AI Overviews is the only surface on this list that is not a conversation, and the two vendors that publish their collection routes both treat it accordingly. Rankscale's credit calculator sorts its engines into two groups and files "AI Overview GUI" with "Copilot GUI", apart from the model endpoints it labels API engines. Depra publishes that it reads "a Google results page for AI Overviews" while reading consumer web interfaces for ChatGPT and Gemini. That is the whole reason this surface behaves differently: it is a feature of a search results page, so the question that decides your measurement is not which model, it is which place.
What Google itself publishes, and it is less than buyers expect
Google's AI features documentation is short and specific. To appear, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet", and "There are no additional technical requirements." It states "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features", and "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." On when the feature shows at all, "AI Overviews are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search".
And on reporting, the sentence that explains why a tool exists for this surface: sites appearing in AI features "are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console" and are "reported on in the Performance report, within the Web search type". There is no AI Overviews line to filter to. Your own analytics will not separate it, so somebody has to read the results page.
The criterion, applied to us as well
| Vendor | AI Overviews at the cheapest published tier? | Route published? | Places on that tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | Yes, "Tracking of 4 AI Search Engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, MS Copilot" | No | "Unlimited Countries & Languages" on Lite |
| Scrunch | Yes, "4 LLMs supported ChatGPT Perplexity Google AIO Copilot" on Core | No | Countries 1 on Core, Unlimited on Enterprise |
| Depra AI | Yes, one of "All 4 engines", "checked daily" | Yes, a Google results page | "Any of 40 markets" on Starter, one project |
| Rankscale | Yes, on every plan card, with local and map pack reporting included on every plan | Partly, through its GUI and API classification | "Regions All" on every plan |
| Profound | Yes, on the free trial | No | Regions 1, Languages 1 on the trial |
| Semrush | Yes, named in its FAQ list of tracked LLMs | No | Worldwide and regional breakdowns, per its FAQ |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Yes, named with the other six platforms | No, but it meters location explicitly: "1 check per platform, location and update" | Priced per location |
| AI Knows Us | Yes, one of five | Yes, a licensed search results provider | One business per plan except our agency plan, which covers 10 |
| Peec AI | Only if it is one of your three slots | No | Multi country from its third tier upward |
Location is the variable that decides this purchase
On a chat surface, two readings from two countries often differ a little. On a search results page they can differ completely, because the result set itself is localised before any summary is written. So the right question to a vendor is not "do you cover AI Overviews" but "how many places do you read it from, and is each place a separate charge".
Three vendors answer that on their own pages. Ahrefs meters location directly, so a second country doubles the bill for the same prompts. Depra publishes "Any of 40 markets" on its entry tier and counts one prompt slot as "one buyer question in one language and one market", which is the clearest definition of the unit on this surface anywhere in the set. Profound's trial is explicitly one region and one language. Scrunch's Core tier is one country and its Enterprise tier is unlimited, which makes a multi-country AI Overviews programme an Enterprise purchase there.
So who is best for AI Overviews
- Depra AI is first on the stated criterion, and it is the only vendor that scores on all three parts: AI Overviews is in its entry four, checked daily, the route is published as a Google results page, and the unit is defined to include the market. If you sell in more than one place, that definition is what makes a quote comparable.
- Rankscale is a strong second and the better pick if the local pack matters, since it publishes local and map pack tracking for AI Overviews alongside five other surfaces, included on every plan, with regions marked All.
- Otterly.AI is third for simplicity: AI Overviews in the base four on its cheapest published tier, daily, with unlimited countries and languages on Lite.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar deserves credit for being the only vendor that puts location in the metering rule itself rather than in a footnote, which makes it honest and makes multi-country tracking expensive in the same breath.
- AI Knows Us publishes its route for this surface and includes it in all five, and we are behind Depra, Rankscale and Otterly on cadence, and behind all three on seats, with one full-access login on every plan.
- Scrunch covers it at Core with one country, so it fits a single-market buyer and becomes an Enterprise conversation for anybody else.
- Semrush covers it inside a much larger SEO platform, which is the right answer if the same team owns rankings and AI visibility.
- Peec AI works if AI Overviews is one of only three surfaces you need.
Two of these vendors were named together in 35 of our own readings and their answer about coverage differs in a way that matters here, which a longer comparison sets out. It carries no durable inbound link from anywhere else on this site, which is true of 147 of our live pages in this category, counted across 2,050 stored bodies.
Questions about tracking Google AI Overviews specifically
Does Search Console tell me when I am in an AI Overview?
Not separately. Google documents that AI features are "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console" and reported "within the Web search type". So your clicks from AI Overviews are already in your totals and cannot be isolated there, which is why a vendor reading the results page has something real to sell on this surface.
Is there any markup or file that gets me into AI Overviews?
Google says no, in its own words: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features", and "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The eligibility bar it does state is that the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. So the controls that matter are the ones that remove you: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.
Why do two tools report different AI Overviews numbers for me?
Usually place, then trigger. The result set is localised before the summary is written, so two readings from two cities are two different measurements. On top of that, Google says the feature "are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search", so the same question can return an AI Overview on one reading and not on the next. Compare like with like by fixing the market and the question set, and keep the readings where no AI Overview appeared, because those are data too.
Is AI Overviews the same surface as Gemini or AI Mode?
No, and Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews "may use different models and techniques". Several vendors list Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Gemini as three separate entries for that reason. If a vendor shows one Google number, ask which of the three it read.
How often should AI Overviews be checked?
Weekly is enough to watch a competitor and daily is worth it while you are testing whether a published page changed the summary. The surface changes with the underlying result set, so cadence here is really about how quickly you want to see a ranking change show up in the answer.
Can I check it myself first?
Yes, and on this surface it is quick. Run your five real buying questions in Google from the market you sell in, screenshot whether an AI Overview appeared, and write down which sites it linked. Repeat monthly. That gives you the trigger rate and the competitive set, which are the two numbers a tool will charge you to watch, and it tells you whether the surface fires in your category at all before you buy anything.
The thing to settle before you compare any two quotes
Ask every vendor one question in writing: for AI Overviews, how many markets does my plan read, and is a second market a second charge. The answers split this market into three groups, and the split has nothing to do with engine counts. Then run your own buying question from your own city and note whether an AI Overview appeared at all, because a surface that does not fire for your category needs no budget this quarter, and that is the cheapest finding available on any of these eight surfaces.
