Bing SEO optimization: the six ranking parameters Bing publishes, the guideline changes that now cover Copilot, and the order to work in

How to optimise a site for Bing, built on Microsoft's "How Bing delivers search results" page and the current Bing Webmaster Guidelines, both read on 22 October 2026.

Bing SEO optimization means making your pages easy for Bing to discover, crawl, render and trust, then making each page the clearest answer to one search. Most of that work is the same as SEO for Google. Bing differs in three practical ways: it publishes its main ranking parameters in order of importance, it asks you to tell it about changes through IndexNow, and its Webmaster Guidelines now say in plain words that the same signals decide whether your pages are used in Copilot answers and grounding results. So the order of work is: get indexed cleanly, fix the signals Bing names, then write pages that stand on their own.

The ranking parameters Bing publishes, in its own order

Microsoft's support page "How Bing delivers search results", read on 22 October 2026, lists the main parameters Bing uses to rank pages and says they "are listed in general order of importance", while "The relative importance of each of the parameters below may vary from search to search and evolve over time."

ParameterWhat Bing says it meansWhat to do about it
Relevance"how closely the content on the landing page matches a user's intent", including words on the page, link text pointing to it, and "semantic equivalents, including synonyms or abbreviations"One page per search intent; titles, headings and link text that name the subject plainly
Quality and credibilityClarity of purpose, usability and presentation, plus authority signals such as what kinds of sites link to youAn about page, named authors, cited sources, links earned from relevant sites
User engagementWhether people click your result, stay, or "quickly return to Bing", and whether they reformulate the queryAnswer the question in the first paragraph; titles and descriptions that match the page
Freshness"Generally, Bing prefers fresh content"Update pages when facts change, with accurate lastmod dates in the sitemap
Location and languageThe user's country and city, where the page is hosted, the page's language, and where its other visitors areCorrect language tags, country specific pages where you really serve different markets
Page load timeSlow pages lead visitors to leave, which Bing will "consider this a poor user experience"Light pages, compressed images, content in the HTML rather than loaded later

Step one: get discovered and indexed cleanly

The Bing Webmaster Guidelines, read on 22 October 2026, ask site owners to make URLs discoverable through "IndexNow URL submission", "XML sitemaps", "Crawlable internal links" and "External links from relevant websites". They say sitemaps should list only canonical URLs, drop deleted or redirected URLs promptly, and include freshness signals such as lastmod. On IndexNow they are specific: use it when URLs are added, updated or removed, and "Avoid batch submissions when possible. Streaming submissions provide faster updates". Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools first, then submit the sitemap and set up IndexNow. Our guide to indexing a site on Bing walks through each step, and our comparison of Google, Bing and Yandex webmaster tools explains which reports each one gives you.

Step two: fix the technical signals Bing names

The guidelines list a short set of technical rules that are easy to check on any site:

  • Redirects: use 301 for permanent moves and "302 redirects only for very short-term changes (less than 2 days)", and "Use redirects instead of canonical tags" when content moves.
  • Duplicates: avoid serving the same content on several URLs; duplicates "dilute signals and reduce Bing's confidence" in choosing one.
  • Rendering: avoid "Hiding critical content behind client-side rendering" and do not block Bingbot in robots.txt.
  • Deleted pages: return a 404, and update removed URLs through IndexNow.
  • robots.txt is not noindex: the guidelines say "robots.txt controls crawl access, not indexing". Use NOINDEX for pages that should not appear.
  • Titles and descriptions: "Missing, duplicate, or overly short title tags and meta descriptions may reduce indexing reliability, ranking, and eligibility for grounding results and citations."

Two directives deserve a check because they affect Copilot directly. The guidelines say "NOARCHIVE prevents content from being used in Copilot responses and grounding results", and that NOCACHE "limits Copilot to using only the URL, title, and snippet". If those tags were added years ago for another reason, decide now whether you still want them.

Step three: write pages Bing can interpret and verify

The content part of the guidelines reads like a checklist. Content should "Fully satisfy user intent", "Be original and authoritative" and "Be easy to understand without external context". Each URL should focus on a single topic, with titles, headings and content aligned. Key information belongs near the top: "Avoid long introductions before addressing the main topic." Facts and definitions should be explicit, and people, organisations, products and places should be named clearly and consistently. Structured data "may support clearer grounding but does not guarantee visibility", and it must match what is visible on the page. Images and video should support the text, with descriptive file names, alt text and captions or transcripts.

What Bing tells you not to do

The guidelines list practices that "reduce ranking eligibility and grounding visibility": cloaking; link schemes, including "link buying, link spamming, private networks, and artificial social promotion schemes"; scraped or lightly rewritten content; keyword stuffing and "Artificially Engineered Language"; large scale automatically generated content without editorial review; affiliate pages without original value; misleading structured data; and "Prompt Injection and AI Manipulation", meaning content written to interfere with the language models Bing or Copilot use. The consequences named range from reduced rankings to removal from the Bing index.

How to measure Bing SEO

Use Bing Webmaster Tools for indexing status, search performance and crawl errors; our guide to each Bing Webmaster Tools report explains what they show. The guidelines also warn that "A decline in clicks does not always indicate a loss of visibility", because content may appear as impressions, citations or grounding references in Copilot. Track impressions and indexing alongside clicks.

Questions about Bing SEO optimization

Is Bing SEO different from Google SEO?

The foundations are the same: crawlable pages, clear content and earned links. Bing adds IndexNow, publishes its ranking parameters in order, and spells out how its directives affect Copilot. A site in good shape for Google usually needs only those additions for Bing.

Does IndexNow help a page rank on Bing?

It helps Bing find new, changed and deleted pages faster, which keeps the index accurate. Ranking still depends on the parameters above. The guidelines recommend submitting each change as it happens rather than in large batches.

Do meta keywords matter on Bing?

The guidelines do not list a keywords tag. They do say missing or duplicate title tags and meta descriptions can reduce ranking and grounding eligibility, so spend the time on titles and descriptions.

Does Bing SEO affect Copilot answers?

The guidelines say Bing and Copilot "rely on the same core crawling, indexing, and ranking foundation as traditional search", and that pages following the guidelines are eligible for "Grounding results and citations". They also state that GEO "does not guarantee grounding or citations".

Which Bing ranking parameter matters most?

Bing lists relevance first and says the order is general. Start by making each page the clearest match for one search, then work down the list.

When the Bing answer is a Copilot answer

Bing's own guidelines now describe a page's job in two places at once: ranking in the results, and being chosen as a grounding source when Copilot writes an answer. A page can do well in one and be absent from the other, and the same split shows up on other assistants. AI Knows Us measures it on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, by asking the questions your buyers ask and recording which businesses and pages each one names.
