DuckDuckGo SEO: most of its links come from Bing, so start there, then handle the four things DuckDuckGo runs itself
How to rank on DuckDuckGo, built on DuckDuckGo's own help pages on result sources, DuckDuckBot, DuckAssistBot, local results and removals, and StatCounter figures, all read on 22 October 2026.

DuckDuckGo SEO is mostly Bing SEO. DuckDuckGo's help page says the traditional links and images in its results are "largely" sourced from Bing, while its own crawler, DuckDuckBot, and many indexes support the rest, along with Instant Answers drawn from more than 100 sources such as Wikipedia. So the first step is to get your site crawled, indexed and ranking well in Bing, using Bing Webmaster Tools. After that, four things are DuckDuckGo's own: its crawler, its AI-assisted answers, its anonymous local results and the Instant Answer sources it trusts.
How big DuckDuckGo is, and where
StatCounter's figures for September 2026 put DuckDuckGo at 0.74% of search worldwide and 1.75% in the United States. Its share is uneven by country: the same month shows 2.21% in Indonesia, ahead of Yahoo there, and 0.36% in Malaysia. DuckDuckGo's own advertising page describes a user base of over 30 million in the US and more than 100 million worldwide. For most sites it is a small channel, and a cheap one to win, because most of the work is shared with Bing.
Where DuckDuckGo results come from
DuckDuckGo's help page "Where do DuckDuckGo search results come from?" describes three layers:
| Layer | Source, in DuckDuckGo's words | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional links and images | "largely" sourced from Bing | Bing indexing and ranking work |
| Instant Answers | Over 100 sources, including specialised sources like Sportradar and crowd-sourced sites like Wikipedia | Accurate presence on the sources it draws from |
| Its own crawling and indexes | DuckDuckBot and "many indexes" | Let DuckDuckBot crawl your site |
The removal page confirms the first layer. It says most traditional results "currently come from Bing", so a request to remove a link goes to Bing first, and once Bing verifies it, the change is reflected in DuckDuckGo automatically. If a removed link still shows, DuckDuckGo asks you to email it, because the result may come from another source.
Step one: do the Bing work
Because the link results mostly come from Bing, a page that Bing has not indexed is unlikely to appear as a DuckDuckGo link. The Bing steps:
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your XML sitemap.
- Check indexing for your important pages in Bing Webmaster Tools, and fix the pages Bing has not indexed.
- Use IndexNow to tell Bing about new and changed URLs. IndexNow covers Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam, Yep and Amazon, though not Google.
- Read Bing's own ranking guidance. Our guide to the ranking parameters Bing publishes sets out what Bing says it rewards and how its guidelines now treat AI answers.
None of this costs anything beyond your time.
Step two: let DuckDuckBot in
DuckDuckGo's help page on DuckDuckBot gives its user agent as DuckDuckBot/1.1; (+http://duckduckgo.com/duckduckbot.html), says it respects robots rules, and lists the IP addresses it crawls from, with a JSON copy at duckduckgo.com/duckduckbot.json. Two checks:
- robots.txt. Make sure you are not blocking DuckDuckBot by name, or every crawler with a broad rule.
- Firewalls and bot filters. Security services sometimes block unfamiliar crawlers. If you allow-list crawlers, add DuckDuckBot's published IP ranges, and refresh them from the JSON file rather than copying a list once.
Step three: decide on DuckAssistBot
DuckDuckGo runs a second crawler, DuckAssistBot, which "crawls pages in real-time" for its AI-assisted answers, and those answers "prominently cite their sources". DuckDuckGo says this data is not used to train AI models. Its user agent is DuckAssistBot/1.2; (+http://duckduckgo.com/duckassistbot.html).
A publisher can opt out by disallowing DuckAssistBot in robots.txt. DuckDuckGo says the change takes effect after 72 hours, and that opting out "does not impact organic search rankings" or whether a site appears in results. So the choice is about whether you want to be a cited source in its AI answers. For most businesses that is worth keeping, because a cited answer carries a link. If you allow it, write pages that answer one question clearly near the top, since that is the passage an assistant can quote.
Step four: local results without tracking
DuckDuckGo serves local results, such as "restaurants nearby", without tracking people. Its help page says it guesses location with a GeoIP lookup on the IP address the device sends, then throws the address away. It also says this can be inaccurate, and may place someone "hundreds of miles away" on mobile networks that route traffic through a central hub, which is why users can choose to share their browser location instead.
For a local business that has two effects. Some DuckDuckGo users see results for a broader area than you might expect, so pages that name your town, area and service plainly help you match them. And because local answers also draw on Instant Answer sources, keep your listings on major directories and review sites accurate and consistent with your website.
Instant Answers and news
Most DuckDuckGo results pages feature one or more Instant Answers, built from specialised and crowd-sourced sources. Make sure the sources those answers read, such as Wikipedia where your organisation genuinely qualifies, describe you accurately. DuckDuckGo's page on news rankings says it ranks without regard to political leaning, does not accept payment to influence rankings outside clearly labelled ads, and demotes news sites with a documented history of extremely low journalistic standards.
Ads on DuckDuckGo are sold through Microsoft Advertising, so a paid presence there is a Microsoft Advertising campaign.
Questions about DuckDuckGo SEO
Do I need a separate DuckDuckGo webmaster tool?
No. DuckDuckGo's help pages point to Bing for traditional results and removals, so Bing Webmaster Tools is the console that matters for its links.
Does blocking DuckAssistBot hurt my DuckDuckGo rankings?
DuckDuckGo says opting out of DuckAssistBot does not affect organic rankings or whether your site appears. It only removes you as a possible source for its AI-assisted answers, starting 72 hours after the robots.txt change.
Why does my site rank on Google but not on DuckDuckGo?
Usually because Bing has not indexed or ranked the page. Check the page in Bing Webmaster Tools first, then check that robots.txt and your firewall let DuckDuckBot through.
Can I pay DuckDuckGo for a better position?
Not in the organic results. DuckDuckGo says it does not accept compensation to influence rankings outside its clearly labelled ads, which are bought through Microsoft Advertising.
When can we judge whether DuckDuckGo SEO is working?
Watch Bing Webmaster Tools for indexing and clicks, and your analytics for visits referred by duckduckgo.com. Crawling and indexing take time on every engine, and the outcome depends on competition, your offer and your budget.
Where DuckDuckGo's AI answers fit in
DuckDuckGo's AI-assisted answers are one more assistant choosing which pages to cite, next to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Each reads the web differently, and a business can be cited by one and missing from another. AI Knows Us asks buyer questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and shows which of them name a business and which sources they lean on, which is a useful check to run next to your Bing and DuckDuckGo work.
