Google Ads for financial advisors: the searches worth buying, the disclosures Google wants on the landing page, and the SEC and FINRA review before an ad runs
How a financial advisor or planner sets up Google search ads and Local Services Ads, read against Google's financial services policy, its verification list, the SEC Marketing Rule and FINRA Rule 2210 on 22 Oct 2026.

Google Ads works for a financial advisor when it buys the searches of people already looking for advice, such as "fee only financial planner near me" or "retirement planning advisor" plus your town, and sends them to a page that answers who you serve, how you are paid and where you are. Google treats personalised financial advice as a financial service, so the landing page must show your physical address and all associated fees without a click or hover. Each ad is also marketing in the regulator's eyes: an SEC registered adviser's ad falls under the SEC Marketing Rule, and a FINRA member's ad needs principal approval before it runs. In the US, Google's Local Services Ads now include a "Financial planning services" category, which is a second way in.
Which searches to buy
Advice searches split into three kinds, and only one is worth most of the budget.
- Service plus place. "Financial planner in Columbus", "retirement advisor near me", "fiduciary advisor for doctors". These people want a meeting. Put most of the spend here, with location targeting set to the area you can serve.
- Your own name. A small brand campaign protects your name and the names of your advisors when a prospect who heard about you searches for you.
- Research questions. "How much do I need to retire" or "Roth conversion rules". Searchers want an article, not an advisor. Answer these with content on your site, not ads.
Add negative keywords from day one: jobs, salary, careers, course, certification, exam and "how to become". Advice searches attract students and job seekers, and every one of those clicks is paid for. To size the budget, open Keyword Planner, enter your service terms, set the location to your area and read the top of page bid range. Click prices in this category vary by city and term, so plan from your own figures.
What Google's financial services policy asks of you
Google's financial products and services policy, read on 22 October 2026, defines the category as products and services "related to the management or investment of money and cryptocurrencies, including personalized advice". Three things follow for an advisor:
- Disclosures on the landing page. Google requires the physical address of the business, all associated fees, and links to any third-party accreditation or endorsement you assert. They "must be clearly and immediately visible without needing to click or hover over anything". A fee schedule hidden behind a tab fails this.
- Local law. You must comply with the rules of every location your ads target, including any disclosures local law requires. Google expects advertisers to do that research themselves.
- Warnings before suspension. Violations of these policies do not lead to immediate account suspension; Google says it issues a warning at least 7 days before suspending an account.
Verification depends on the country you target
Google's financial services verification page lists the locations where advertisers must be verified before showing financial services ads. On 22 October 2026 the list had 42 entries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India and most of the European Union. The United States and Canada were not on it. Verification asks for the services you offer, the licences you hold and your registration numbers, and must be submitted by an admin of the Google Ads account or its payments profile. A US firm that targets UK expatriates, for example, needs UK verification for that campaign.
Local Services Ads for financial planners
Google's Local Services Ads overview (read 22 October 2026) lists "Financial planning services" among its categories. These ads appear above ordinary results, you pay only for leads, and prospects call or message you directly from the ad. For professional categories, pre-badge ads need a licence or business registration in the US, headshots, reviews where the category requires them, and billing set up. Google also says a provider that regularly fails to answer calls or messages can see its ad ranking affected, so route the leads to someone who answers. How these ads compare with search ads is set out in our Local Services and search ads comparison.
The SEC Marketing Rule and your search ads
For an investment adviser registered, or required to be registered, with the SEC, 17 CFR 275.206(4)-1 (eCFR, issue of 19 October 2026) defines an advertisement as a communication to more than one person that offers the adviser's advisory services. A search ad and its landing page fit that description. State registered advisers follow their own state's rules instead. In practice the rule shapes ad copy in four ways:
- No untrue or misleading statement, and no material fact you cannot substantiate on request. "Top rated" needs evidence behind it.
- Benefits need "fair and balanced treatment of any material risks or material limitations". A headline about growth needs the risk on the landing page.
- Testimonials and endorsements, including client reviews you quote, need clear disclosure of whether the person is a client, whether they were paid and any material conflict.
- A third-party rating needs its date, the period it covers, who produced it and whether you paid to obtain or use it. Gross performance figures need net figures beside them with at least equal prominence.
FINRA Rule 2210 for registered representatives
If you are a registered representative of a broker-dealer, FINRA Rule 2210 applies. A retail communication is any written, including electronic, communication "distributed or made available to more than 25 retail investors within any 30 calendar-day period", which covers a running search ad. An appropriately qualified registered principal must approve each retail communication before it is used. Communications must be fair and balanced, may not predict or project performance, and must prominently disclose the name of the member firm. Send ad copy and landing pages through your firm's compliance review as one package, and keep the approved version.
A first campaign, step by step
- Write one landing page per service, with your address, fees and disclosures visible at the top.
- Get compliance approval for the page and every ad variation before launch.
- Build one search campaign for service plus place terms, with the negative list above.
- Add a small brand campaign.
- In the US, apply for Local Services Ads under Financial planning services.
- Track booked meetings, not form fills alone, by importing outcomes from your CRM.
Search is one of four lead sources; the others, and how each is paid for, are on our financial planning lead generation page. Facebook and Instagram run under Meta's special ad category rules, covered in Facebook ads for financial advisors.
Questions about Google Ads for financial advisors
Do financial advisors need Google verification to advertise?
It depends on where the ads show. Google's verification list, read on 22 October 2026, covered 42 locations including the UK, Australia and Singapore, but not the United States or Canada. Every location still requires the landing page disclosures.
Is a Google search ad an advertisement under the SEC Marketing Rule?
For an SEC registered adviser, a communication to more than one person that offers advisory services is an advertisement, and a search ad with its landing page meets that test. Run both through the same review as your other marketing.
Can we show client reviews or star ratings in our ads?
Only with the disclosures the rule sets: whether the reviewer is a client, any compensation and any material conflict. A third-party rating needs its date, period, source and whether you paid for it.
Are Local Services Ads open to financial planners?
Yes, in the US. Google lists "Financial planning services" as a category, with pay per lead pricing and a licence or registration check before ads go live.
When can we judge whether Google Ads is working for our practice?
Measure cost per booked first meeting and cost per new client, in the ad account and your CRM, over at least a full quarter of your sales cycle. The result depends on your local competition, your offer and your budget.
The adviser shortlist an assistant writes
Some prospects now skip the search results and ask ChatGPT or Gemini "who is a good fee only planner in my area for a business owner". The answer names a handful of firms, drawn from directories, regulator records, reviews and the firms' own pages, and no ad buys a place in it.
Whether your practice appears in those answers is a different question from what your ads report. AI Knows Us asks the questions your prospects ask on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and shows which advisers each answer names and the sources it used, so you can see whether your own pages are among them.
