Google Ads local services and search ads compared, and the badge Google actually publishes in 2026

One charges for a lead, one charges for a click, and the eligible category list decides which of them you are even allowed to buy.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 21 October 2026

Local Services Ads and ordinary search ads are two different purchases, and the first question is not which one performs better but whether your category is on Google's list at all. Local Services Ads charge for a lead rather than a click, show above the regular text ads, and need Google to screen the business before a badge appears on the profile. Search ads charge per click, accept almost any lawful business, and give you keyword control that Local Services Ads do not offer. If your category is on the eligible list and somebody answers your phone, Local Services Ads are usually the first lead source worth turning on. If your category is not on the list, search ads are the only route, and budget does not change that.

The two are not rivals in the way the search implies. A plumber with an eligible category usually ends up running both, because Local Services Ads answer the generic emergency search and search ads answer everything the service list cannot describe.

What Google's own page published on 21 October 2026

These are quotations from the Local Services Ads help page, served as the United States version and read on 21 October 2026. Worth saying how we got there: the obvious entry point, ads.google.com/local-services-ads/, answered with an HTTP 301 to a general Google Ads page from this machine, so the product facts here come from the support documentation rather than from the marketing page.

  • Pay only for leads related to your business and the services you offer.
  • These leads come in as phone calls and messages sent through your Local Services ad.
  • Customers choose you: You only hear from customers who have specifically selected your profile out of all the rest.
  • If you regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, your ad ranking may be affected.
  • At this time, Local Services Ads are available only for certain service categories.

Read that fourth line twice before you buy. In search ads a missed call costs you one lead. Here the page says your ranking moves, which makes your phone cover part of the media buy.

The badge on the page we read is called Google Verified

The help page names one badge, and it is the Google Verified badge. It says the badge signals that your business has passed Google's proprietary screening process, that Provider profiles display the Google Verified badge along with the specific verification checks they have completed, and carries this note: The Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for verticals in the auto, beauty, and dining categories.

Most writing about this product, including a great deal of it published this year, describes a Google Guaranteed badge for home services and a Google Screened badge for professional services. Neither name appears on the page we read on 21 October 2026. So check the badge wording inside your own account or on the current help page before you print it on a site, a proposal or an ad. A restated badge name is the sort of detail that goes stale quietly and then sits in a sales deck for a year.

Eligibility is the whole decision, and the list is no longer just home services

The eligible category list on that page runs to roughly two hundred entries. The trades everybody associates with the product are there: Roofers, Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC (heating or air conditioning), House cleaning services, Lawn care services, Moving services, Pest control services, Junk removal services, Window cleaning services, Towing, Snow removal, Tree services, Carpet cleaning services, Water damage services.

So are a great many categories that are not trades at all. Health and dentistry appear as Dentist, Orthodontist, Chiropractor, Dermatologist, Optometrist, Podiatrist, Physical therapist and Primary care physician. Legal work is split by practice into entries such as Personal injury lawyer services, Immigration lawyer services, Criminal lawyer services, Bankruptcy lawyer services and Estate lawyer services. There is Real estate services, Tax services, Child care, Preschool, Tutor, Driving instructor, Veterinarian, Funeral home, Storage, Pet grooming, Hair Salon, Nail Salon, Barber Shop, Massage therapist, and a long run of restaurant categories by cuisine, plus Bakery, Coffee Shop and Dessert Shop.

Three limits in that list decide real cases:

  • Seven entries are marked (California and Florida only): Architect, Drain expert, Home insulation, Insurance agency, Interior designer, Piercing studio and Tattoo studio. If you sell one of those outside those two states, this product is not available to you no matter what a competitor in Tampa or San Diego appears to be running.
  • Booking leads aren't available for health care verticals.
  • Pre-badge ads aren't available for garage door services, health care verticals, and locksmiths.

Before anything else, open the list and find your own category by its exact name. An agency that cannot tell you which entry you fall under has not checked, and a general contractor, a handyman and a carpenter are three separate entries with three different screening consequences. For the campaign side of the same trade decision, bidding on the project rather than the trade is covered in PPC for contractors.

Pre-badge ads, and where they sit

Google also offers a way to start collecting leads while screening finishes. The page says pre-badge ads let you receive leads from Local Services Ads after preliminary checks, that your Local Services listing will appear in consumer search results, and that Google will place the listing below providers who've completed all onboarding. The requirements it lists for that stage include a License, or business registration, if you're not required to submit your license, an acknowledgement that you possess all appropriate business licenses, Reviews, subject to category requirements, and Complete billing setup and set your budget.

That is a usable answer to the slowest part of this product. You can be live and below the badged providers in days, rather than waiting weeks to be live at all.

What to settle with whoever runs it

  • Who owns the account and the profile. The reviews and the verification history attach to it, and they are the asset.
  • Who answers the phone, in what time, and what happens at night. The ranking line above makes this an advertising decision, not an operations footnote.
  • Who disputes bad leads, and how often. The page lists Track your lead credits (US and Canada only) among the account features, so a lead credit process exists and somebody has to work it every week.
  • What the agency fee is calculated on. A percentage of spend on a pay per lead product rewards volume of leads, including the ones you would dispute. Flat fee plus a named lead quality measure is the cleaner arrangement. The tiers and fee shapes are set out in PPC services packages.

Questions about Google Ads local services

Is Local Services Ads cheaper than Google search ads?

It is priced differently rather than cheaply. You pay for a call or a message instead of a click, so the waste that search ads carry in irrelevant clicks disappears, and a different kind of waste appears in leads that are out of area or out of scope. Run the first sixty days with every lead tagged by outcome and you will have your own number, which is the only one that applies to your category and your city.

Do I still need search ads if my category is eligible?

Usually yes, for the searches the service list cannot express. Local Services Ads work from categories and service areas. Search ads work from the words people type, which include brand names, part names, specific symptoms and comparison phrases. Most accounts keep a small, tight search campaign alongside.

What is the Google Verified badge?

On the help page read on 21 October 2026 it is the badge shown on a Local Services profile once Google's screening is complete, displayed along with the specific verification checks they have completed, and it is noted as unavailable for the auto, beauty and dining verticals. If your own account shows different wording, trust the account.

My category is not on the list. What now?

Search ads, local organic listings and your map profile. The category list is Google's and it is not negotiable by spend. This is the one case where an agency promising to get you into Local Services Ads is selling something it cannot deliver.

Does a missed call really affect ranking?

The page states it plainly: If you regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, your ad ranking may be affected. Treat answer rate as a campaign setting. If you cannot staff the hours, the page also lists the option to Pause your ad if you're too busy to accept new leads, which is a better outcome than a slow decline nobody can explain.

The check that happens after the lead, and nobody's account shows it

Local Services Ads work because Google verified a license and then showed a badge. That is a trust signal built for one surface. The same buyer increasingly asks an assistant first, in words like best roofer near me or which plumber should I call, and the answer that comes back is assembled from pages and profiles across the web. Your Local Services account is not one of them. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews name whichever businesses their sources name, and a verified license inside Google Ads is invisible to all five.

AI Knows Us is where that gap gets measured: we read what those five apps say when somebody asks for a provider in your category and city, and show which sources the answer came from. We are not an ads platform and we do not manage Local Services campaigns. On enterprise paperwork a rival is plainly ahead of us: Profound's pricing page, read on 21 October 2026, publishes Up to 9 Answer Engines tracked and SSO/SAML + SOC 2 compliance on its enterprise plan, while our own rendered pricing page names five apps and carries none of those words. If a security review is your gate, start there and not with us.

What a provider should publish so a state board, a buyer or an assistant can check the same number is set out in AI visibility for US local services. It is worth the click for a second reason: measured on 21 October 2026 across 2,640 stored page bodies, 1,088 of our 2,551 live pages, 42.6 percent, carry no durable inbound link from another page, and that one was among them.
