Good handyman advertising does two things: it gets the phone ringing for small jobs nearby, and it turns those first jobs into a list of homeowners, landlords and property managers who call you again. The channels that do this best are a complete Google Business Profile, Google's Local Services Ads, which include a Handyman category, a simple website with one page per service, and a reason for every customer to book the next visit. Before any of it runs, check what your state lets you say. Many states license contractors above a job value, and some, such as California, write rules about the wording of handyman ads themselves.
Check the licence wording before the first ad
A handyman ad is an advertisement for construction work in the eyes of many state licensing boards, and that includes web pages, directory listings and social posts. California is a clear example of how detailed the rules can be. Its Business and Professions Code, read on 22 October 2026, says:
- Section 7027.2: a person without a contractor's licence may advertise for construction work "only if the aggregate contract price for labor, material, and all other items on a project or undertaking is less than one thousand dollars ($1,000) and the person states in the advertisement that the person is not licensed". This wording took effect on 1 January 2025.
- Section 7027.1: "advertise" includes signs, newspapers, "any electronic transmission" and directory listings, and advertising without the right licence is a misdemeanor.
- Section 7030.5: a licensed contractor must include the licence number in all forms of advertising.
- Section 7048: the small job exemption covers work under 1,000 dollars that needs no building permit, but it does not apply to a person who advertises in a way that might indicate they are a contractor, or who employs others on the job.
Other states set their own thresholds and wording, so read your state board's rules, or ask it, before you print a van wrap. If you hold a licence, put the number on every ad, the website footer and your Business Profile description. If you do not, keep the job list to what you may lawfully take on and say so plainly.
The channels that fill a handyman calendar
| Channel | What it does well | What to set up |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Map results for "handyman near me" | Service-area business with your towns, real job photos, a review request after every visit |
| Local Services Ads | Pay per lead calls, above normal search ads | Handyman category, licence or business registration, reviews, a budget |
| Search ads | Specific jobs, such as TV mounting or drywall repair | One ad group per job, negatives for jobs you do not do |
| Website | Proof and detail for people comparing | One page per service, the towns you cover, your licence status, photos |
| Neighbourhood and social | Word of mouth at scale | Before and after posts, replies in local groups, a referral offer |
| Property managers and landlords | Steady repeat work | A rate sheet, response time promise you can keep, invoices with photos |
Google's Local Services Ads list, read on 22 October 2026, names "Handyman" as a category. You pay for leads rather than clicks, and Google says that regularly failing to answer calls or messages can affect where your ad ranks. Our comparison of Local Services Ads and Search ads explains how the two work together, and PPC for contractors covers bidding on the job rather than the trade.
For the Business Profile, Google's service area help says a business that visits customers and has no permanent signage at an address it serves from should be listed as a service-area business. Google's local ranking rests on "relevance, distance, and popularity", and Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Reviews, accurate categories and real photos are the levers you control. Our page on the Google Business Profile covers ownership and setup.
Facebook ads count handyman work as housing
Meta's Special Ad Categories page, read on 22 October 2026, defines housing ads as ads that promote a housing opportunity or related service, "including but not limited to" home listings, insurance, mortgage loans, "housing repairs" and home equity or appraisal services. For advertisers in or reaching the US, and those reaching Canada and some European countries, Meta says age, gender, ZIP code or postal code, exclusion targeting, lookalike audiences and saved audiences are limited or unavailable for these ads. Declare the category, target by a radius around your base, and let the creative do the filtering: show the jobs you want, in the kind of homes you serve.
Two federal rules that shape the offer
Selling in the customer's home. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule (16 CFR 429) covers sales made at the buyer's home for 25 dollars or more. If you quote and sign a job on the doorstep or at the kitchen table, the rule requires a receipt or contract telling the buyer they may cancel before midnight of the third business day, with a notice of cancellation attached. Sales that follow the buyer's visit to your permanent place of business are excluded. Build the notice into your quote template so it is never forgotten.
Older homes and lead paint. Under EPA rule 40 CFR 745.81, no firm may "perform, offer, or claim to perform" renovations in target housing or child-occupied facilities without EPA certification, unless an exception applies. Target housing means housing built before 1978, with some exceptions such as housing for the elderly or disabled without young children. Painting, window, door and drywall jobs in older homes are typical handyman work, so if you advertise them, get the firm certified or keep those jobs out of the ad.
Handyman advertising ideas that bring repeat work
- A seasonal checklist. Offer a spring and autumn home check, with gutters, caulking, smoke alarm batteries and door seals, and remind past customers by text or email when it comes round.
- A job list priced by the task. People booking small jobs want to know what is included. Publish what each task covers and what changes the quote.
- Landlord and property manager packs. Turnover repairs, quick fixes between tenants and photo reports suit small portfolios that cannot keep a maintenance person.
- Before and after photos with the street. Ask permission, then post the result with the neighbourhood named. Neighbours trust work they can see.
- Vehicle and yard signs. A clean van with your phone number, website and, where required, your licence number or unlicensed statement, works every day you are parked.
- A referral thank-you. Thank the customer who sent you a job, and keep any reward modest and clearly stated.

Questions about handyman advertising
Can I advertise handyman services without a licence?
It depends on your state. In California, an unlicensed person may advertise only for jobs under 1,000 dollars in total and must state in the ad that they are not licensed. Other states set different limits, so check your state board first.
Is Local Services Ads worth it for a handyman?
It suits handymen who can answer the phone and respond to messages quickly, because Google charges per lead and responsiveness affects ranking. Track which leads became paid jobs before you raise the budget.
Why can I not target by ZIP code on Facebook?
Meta counts housing repairs as housing ads. For those, ZIP code, age, gender, lookalike and saved audiences are limited or unavailable in the US, so use a radius and strong creative instead.
What should a handyman website include?
One page per service you want to be found for, the towns you cover, real photos, your licence number or status, how quoting works and a phone number that is answered. That gives Google and customers something specific to match.
When can we judge whether our handyman marketing is working?
Count booked jobs and repeat customers by source each month, against what each source cost. The result depends on local competition, your prices and how quickly you respond.
Who an assistant names for small jobs near you
A homeowner may now ask ChatGPT or Gemini "who is a reliable handyman in my area for small repairs?" and get three or four names back, drawn from review sites, directories and business pages the assistant trusts. A full Business Profile and service pages give it accurate facts to repeat about you.
Finding out whether your business is one of those names is a new kind of check. AI Knows Us runs it: it asks local service questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and shows which tradespeople each answer recommends and the sources behind each one.
