Local SEO company in India: the address, directory and review problems the work has to solve

A good local SEO company in India does three jobs before anything else. It sets up your Google Business Profile so that Google can place you on the map even when your street address is vague, it keeps the same name, phone and address on the Indian directories your customers already use, and it builds reviews in a way that Google's rules and India's review standard both allow. Pages for each area you serve come after that. If a package does not name these three jobs as line items, you are buying a report, not local SEO.
How Google decides who shows in the map results
Google's own help page on local ranking says local results "are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity". It also says, in plain words, "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Anybody who offers a fixed map position for a fee is selling something Google says does not exist.
In practice:
- Relevance is the category you pick, the services you list and the words on your website. A clinic that lists only "Doctor" will lose to one that lists the treatments people actually search for.
- Distance is fixed by where you are and where the searcher is. A pin in the wrong lane costs you calls.
- Popularity is reviews, mentions on other sites and how well known the business already is.
The Indian address problems, and what Google's rules say about each
Most of the trouble with Indian profiles starts with the address. Google's Business Profile guidelines, read on 22 October 2026, cover the cases an Indian business meets every day.
| Situation | What Google's guidelines say | What the company should do |
|---|---|---|
| Address that does not pinpoint the shop, common in older markets and new layouts | Cross streets and nearby landmarks may be included only "in regions where the official street address doesn't accurately pinpoint the business's location" | Use the landmark only where it is needed, and set the map pin by hand at the real entrance |
| Office in a co-working space | Not allowed unless the office has clear signage, receives customers during business hours and is staffed by your own people | Do not list a shared desk as a branch. List it only if it meets all three conditions |
| Virtual office or a rented mailing address | Not eligible for a Business Profile | Use your real place of work, or set up as a service-area business |
| Electrician, pest control, home tutor or any business that travels to the customer | One service-area profile; the service area should not extend beyond about 2 hours of driving from your base | Hide the address, list the areas you really serve, and stop at a realistic radius |
| Cloud kitchen with several delivery brands | Delivery-only brands are allowed if they have distinct branded packaging and a distinct website; they must hide the address and add service areas | One profile per brand that meets the test, address hidden, delivery areas listed |
The business name is the other place profiles go wrong. Google says your name "should reflect your business's real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers." A name like "Sharma Dental Clinic Best Root Canal Dentist Near Me" breaks that rule. A company that stuffs keywords into your name is putting the profile at risk to win a few weeks of ranking.
The directories that matter in India
Indian buyers also look you up on directories and marketplaces, and search engines read those listings too. The job is consistency: the same name, the same phone number and the same address everywhere, so nothing contradicts your Google profile.
| Kind of business | Where listings commonly appear |
|---|---|
| Local services and shops | Justdial, Sulekha |
| Manufacturers, traders and suppliers | IndiaMART, TradeIndia |
| Restaurants and cloud kitchens | Zomato, Swiggy |
| Doctors and clinics | Practo |
| Everyone | Apple Maps, Bing Places, and MapmyIndia's Mappls app |
A good company starts with an audit of these listings, closes duplicates and fixes old phone numbers before it creates anything new. An old number on one directory and a new one on Google sends mixed signals, and it is one of the cheapest things to fix.
Reviews: what Google and India's review standard allow
Reviews are the part of local SEO most open to shortcuts, and the rules are clear. Google's Maps contribution policy says businesses must not offer "payment, discounts, free goods and/or services" in exchange for a review, must not "discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive reviews", and should not "require or pressure users to leave ratings or write reviews while on the premises". It also does not allow asking staff to collect a set number of reviews. Reviews from employees, former employees and family are treated as a conflict of interest.
India has its own standard on top of this. The Bureau of Indian Standards published IS 19000:2022, "Online Consumer Reviews, Principles and Requirements for their Collection, Moderation and Publication", launched by the Department of Consumer Affairs in November 2022. The government summary says it applies to every online platform that publishes consumer reviews, that it would "initially be voluntary", and that it lists ways to verify a review author, such as email, a phone call or SMS, or a confirmation link. It also says that if it is made mandatory, a violation may be treated as an unfair trade practice.
There is a data protection side too. Sending review requests on WhatsApp or SMS uses your customers' phone numbers. The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 were notified on 14 November 2025 with an eighteen month period for phased compliance, according to the government's own explainer. That explainer says a notice must explain the specific purpose for which data is collected, and that people may withdraw consent at any time. Ask the company how its review tool collects numbers, what notice your customers see, and how somebody opts out.
The honest method: ask every customer the same way, soon after the job, with a direct link, and reply to every review in public.
Language and locality pages
Many local searches in India are typed or spoken in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati and other languages, or in English with local place names. Your Google profile can carry only one name and one description, so the website does the language work. A page for each locality you really serve, written in the language your customers use, with the services, timings and directions for that branch, gives Google something relevant to match. A page that only swaps the area name is a doorway, and Google's spam policies treat it as one.
What the package should list
Prices for local SEO in India vary a lot by city, number of branches and how competitive your category is. Our page on SEO prices in India explains what moves a quote. Whatever the price, the scope should name these items:
- Business Profile audit and correction: category, services, hours, photos, pin position, and verification help.
- Directory audit: a list of every listing found, duplicates closed, details made consistent.
- A review process you run yourself, with the request message and the link, written to Google's policy.
- Locality or branch pages on your own website, one per real location or service area.
- A monthly report on calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile, not only rankings.
- Written confirmation that you stay the primary owner of the profile. Google lets a profile have several owners and managers, so the company can be added as a manager without owning it.
For the method behind each item, our guide to local SEO from the business profile to the map pack goes step by step.
Local SEO in India: what owners ask before they sign
Should I hire a local SEO company in my own city?
It helps when the work needs somebody on the ground, such as photographs or many branches. For a single shop or clinic, a company in another city can do the profile, directory and page work just as well. Judge the named person doing the work, not the office address.
Can a company get me into the top three map results?
Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. A company can fix what Google reads and help you earn reviews. A promise of a fixed position is a reason to walk away.
Is it safe to buy reviews or run a review contest?
No. Google's policy bars incentives of any kind for reviews, and India's review standard was written to stop paid and fake reviews. Removed reviews and a suspended profile cost far more than the reviews gained.
My shop has no proper street address. Can I still rank?
Yes. Set the pin by hand at the entrance, add a landmark only where the official address does not locate you, and use photos of the shop front so customers recognise it.
The next search after the map
A growing share of local buyers in India now ask an assistant the question they used to type into Maps: which clinic in Velachery handles braces for adults, which caterer in Pune does Gujarati thalis for a wedding of two hundred. The assistant answers with names, and it builds that answer from the same profiles, directories and reviews described above, which is one more reason to get them consistent. If you want to know whether your business is one of the names it gives, AI Knows Us checks what ChatGPT, Gemini and the other assistants say when your customers ask.
