Rank tracker alternatives for competitor rank tracking, compared on how many rivals each plan lets you watch

Tracking a competitor is the one job Google will not do for you, and the limit that bites is not keywords. It is how many rival domains a plan allows, and only some vendors publish it.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Search Console reports your own positions and will never report a competitor's, which is the single structural reason paid trackers exist. So competitor tracking is the job to shop for, and the specification that matters is how many rival domains you can watch and at what granularity.

The criterion on this page: what does the vendor publish about competitors per project, and about what it stores? Keywords are the headline number and competitors are the one that constrains the work.

Why people go looking for an alternative

Three reasons come up repeatedly and each points at a different replacement. The plan is metered on a unit that does not fit, usually keywords when the real requirement is locations or rivals. The seats cost more than the data. Or the product does not read the surface that now answers the buyer's question, which is the newest reason and the one changing this category.

Match the alternative to the reason. Switching vendors to fix a unit problem is sensible. Switching to fix a check frequency problem is paying for something you could have changed in a settings panel.

The alternatives, and what each publishes

Nightwatch publishes competitors per site as unlimited in its own feature table, alongside "Unlimited seats. Pay for keywords tracked, not team size", "7,500 Keywords" and "500 AI prompts" on the "399 euros a month" agency tier, and "3-year history, Full SERP archives retained for 3 years", on nightwatch.io/pricing, read 21 October 2026. For competitor work the history line is the sleeper feature: a rival's trajectory over two years is a different argument from a snapshot.

AccuRanker publishes keywords only, at "Professional $224 / month" with "Keywords 2,000 3,000 5,000" and "Expert $764 / month" with "Keywords 10,000 15,000 20,000 25,000", plus "Unlimited read API" on the higher tier and "unlimited users and domains" on Enterprise, on accuranker.com/pricing. It names "Organic Site Explorer" and "SERP Analysis" as separate features, which is where competitor work happens in that product.

SE Ranking publishes a named Competitor Analysis Tool and prices projects explicitly: "10 projects and 1 manager seat" at "$129.00 /mo" and "30 projects and 3 manager seats" at "$279.00 /mo", with "5 domains in GEO research" and "15 domains in GEO research" respectively, on seranking.com/pricing.html. That GEO research domain count is the clearest published competitor limit of the group, because it says in a number how many rival domains the plan will analyse.

Semrush publishes "5 websites to monitor" and "500 keywords to track daily" at "$139" on semrush.com/pricing, with "Basic keyword research and competitor analysis" on the same row. Websites to monitor is the number to read if your competitor set is large.

Wincher publishes "up to 10 websites" on its small plan and "unlimited websites" above it, with the price rendered as an ellipsis in a plain fetch of wincher.com/pricing.

Build it and the limit disappears, replaced by a bill per request. dataforseo.com/pricing publishes a SERP API "From $0.0006 / SERP" with no subscription and a "$50 minimum top-up"; serpapi.com/pricing publishes "1,000 searches per month" for "$25 / month" with a 200 per hour throughput ceiling. A competitor set of ten domains over two hundred phrases weekly is about 8,600 readings a month, which is arithmetic rather than a plan tier.

The ranking, on the stated criterion

On publishing a competitor limit a buyer can read before paying, the order on 21 October 2026 ran: SE Ranking first, because "5 domains in GEO research" and "15 domains in GEO research" are explicit rival counts per tier and almost nobody else states one. Nightwatch second, because competitors per site are marked unlimited and the three year archive makes competitor history usable. Semrush third, because "5 websites to monitor" is a clear ceiling even though it covers your own sites too. Wincher fourth, because website counts are published while the price is not. AccuRanker fifth on the competitor limit specifically, and first on keyword ladder clarity. The APIs last on convenience and first on having no limit at all.

What to record about a competitor, beyond position

Position alone tells you very little about a rival. Record the URL that ranks, because a competitor ranking with a product page is a different threat from one ranking with a blog post. Record what sits above the links for that query. Record the date they first appeared for the term, which the archive length in your plan decides. And record whether their page was cited in an answer engine, which is now a separate reading and not in any of these tools as a position.

The competitor comparison that happens in a sentence

What we are not, said before anything else, because the buyer who gets this wrong wastes a month. AI Knows Us does not sell a keyword tool, a rank tracker or a SERP API. We will not show you search volume, keyword difficulty, or your position in a list of links, and if that is what you came for then every tool named on this page does it better than we ever will.

Here is the competitor reading none of the alternatives above reports. A buyer asks an assistant to compare the options in your category, in a sentence that names nobody, and the answer names two or three businesses. If one of them is your rival and none of them is you, that is a competitive loss with no position attached to it, which means no rank tracker will ever show it to you.

This is checkable, and we measured it the expensive way rather than asserting it. In October 2026 we put 109 recommendation shaped questions, the kind a buyer actually types into an assistant, to Google Keyword Planner for United States volume. Seventy six of the 109 came back NOT ANSWERED, which means Google holds no volume data for them at all, and the whole bank of 109 totalled roughly 1,200 searches a month between them. Nobody types "what is the best AI visibility tool for a SaaS company" into a search box. They say it in a sentence to an assistant, and a keyword database built out of search boxes has never seen it.

What we do sell is the reading of a demand no keyword tool has ever seen. When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews who to buy from, in a sentence that never names you, we record whether your name comes out, who was named instead, and which page the engine cited. Then we run the content and placement work that changes it. A credit is one buyer question put to one app once. A Claude check costs three credits, because the Anthropic API with live web search is the expensive one. Most checks cost one.

Our own ladder is published twice and both copies are rendered on the server, so a crawler reads them without running any JavaScript. aiknowsus.com/llms.txt is plain text, and aiknowsus.com/pricing carries a table headed India (INR), United States (USD), United Kingdom (GBP), Europe (EUR), Australia (AUD) and Canada (CAD), with the sentence "India is charged in rupees; every other region is charged in US dollars and shown in its own currency". Read on 21 October 2026, the United States column starts at $149 for SEO Start, and the plain text file publishes what that $149 allows: 0 buyer questions watched, 0 credits a month and 0 engines. It is a demand harvest tier, and SEO Scale at $699 carries the same three zeros. The cheapest plan that reads all five answer surfaces is Growth at $299, with 100 buyer questions watched and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. Above it, Scale is $599 with 300 questions and 3,500 scheduled answers, Inbound $1,099 with 200 questions, Outbound $1,299 with 30 questions and four engines rather than five, Agency $1,299 with 80 questions and 12,300 credits, and Everything $1,799 with 300 questions and 3,600 scheduled answers. A top up of 1,000 credits is $49. Managed GEO is published in rupees only, at Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month with a three month minimum, so we quote it in rupees rather than converting it ourselves.

Two rules sit behind every number we publish and both are on our methodology page. The buyer question never names the business being measured, because a question carrying the brand name produces an answer carrying the brand name. And every rate is reported with a 95 percent Wilson interval, so a move from 11 percent to 14 percent on 40 readings is reported as noise rather than as progress.

Where a rival is ahead of us, here it is plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read at ahrefs.com/brand-radar on 21 October 2026, names seven surfaces against our five: AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, ChatGPT and Claude. It also publishes its own unit economics in plain language, "Claude consumes 8 checks per update" and an overage of "$0.020/check", which is more disclosure than we publish. SE Ranking, read at seranking.com/pricing.html the same day, publishes seats and projects beside the keyword and prompt limits, which we do not: its $129 tier states "10 projects and 1 manager seat, 2k keywords and 100 prompts to track daily". Nightwatch, read at nightwatch.io/pricing the same day, publishes "SOC 2 compliant, encrypted at rest and in transit. SSO on Enterprise" and white label client reports. Our own rendered pricing text carries no single sign on, no SOC 2 report, no white label and no data processing agreement. Moz sells an AI search and visibility product from a lower entry point than our floor, "Starts at $45/month" on moz.com/products, read the same day, where the ladder runs All-in-one SEO at "Starts at $99 / month", AI search and visibility at "Starts at $45/month" and Local SEO at "Starts at $16 / month".

On this page's criterion we publish no competitor domain limit, because we do not track domains: we record who was named in an answer, which is a list we do not ask you to specify in advance. Where we rank first is one narrow, checkable thing: of the vendors read on 21 October 2026, ours was the only one publishing the price, the buyer questions watched, the credits, the engines and the check cadence for every tier in a server rendered plain text file. For competitor positions in a results page, buy one of the five above.

For the wider tracking category rather than the competitor cut, we keep a separate page on the SEO tracking tools compared by what each one actually tracks. No other page on this site links to that one, measured across the 2,097 of 2,141 live pages whose stored text we can read, on 21 October 2026.

What buyers ask about competitor rank tracking

How many competitors should I track? Three to five that a buyer would genuinely choose instead of you. A list of twenty becomes a report nobody reads.

Can I see a competitor's traffic? No. You can see an estimate of it, which is modelled from rank and a click curve, and it should be used as an ordering rather than a figure.

Is it worth switching vendors for competitor features? Only if the unit is wrong for you. If the problem is check frequency or a keyword list that grew, fix that first.
