Best SEO tracking tools compared, by what each one actually tracks

Tracking is four separate jobs sold under one word: positions, indexing, traffic and change. Most people buy a tool for the first and then complain it does not do the other three.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Ask ten people what an SEO tracking tool does and you will get four answers, all correct. Tracking covers positions, indexing, traffic and change, and the products that do one of them well usually do the others badly or not at all. Buying by the word rather than the job is how people end up with three subscriptions and still get surprised by a template that stopped being indexed.

The criterion on this page: what does the tool take a reading of, and how often does its own page say that reading is taken? A cadence a vendor publishes is one you can plan around.

The four jobs, and the right tool for each

JobBest answerPublished limit or cadence
Positions for a keyword listA rank tracker, or Search Console if you can waitSemrush publishes 500 keywords tracked daily and 5 websites to monitor on its entry SEO tier, read 21 October 2026. Rank Math publishes rank tracking with twelve months of position history on its Pro tiers, and 50,000 keywords on its agency tier.
Indexing and coverageSearch Console, and nothing else is first partyFree for any property you can verify. This is the job people most often have no tool for, and it is the one where a silent failure costs the most.
Traffic and outcomesGA4 with key events markedFree. Read the Organic Search channel by landing page.
Change on the site and in the resultsA scheduled crawl plus a change alertScreaming Frog puts scheduling and crawl comparison behind its licence and publishes a free limit of 500 URLs, read 21 October 2026. Sitebulb publishes Cloud for crawl automation and automated reporting, with Desktop for local crawls.

The job nobody buys a tool for, and the one that breaks quietly

Position tracking is the job everybody buys and the one where a tool adds least, because Search Console gives you average position for free from Google's own log. Indexing is the job almost nobody tracks and the one where a failure is invisible until traffic has already gone. A template change that adds a noindex tag will not move your tracked positions for weeks, and will show in coverage the next day.

So the honest ordering is uncomfortable: set up coverage monitoring first, which costs nothing, and buy the rank tracker second if somebody will read the chart. Reporting sits on top of those four jobs, and seo analytics tools differ on which number each one is entitled to report, because a figure modelled from another index is a weaker claim than one taken from your own property.

What a position number can and cannot tell you now

A single position is an average of a thing that varies by searcher, location, device and history, and the share of results that are not ten blue links keeps growing. Use it as a direction of travel across a list of twenty phrases rather than as a score for one. If a tool reports one local position for a whole city, treat it as an average of something that changes every half mile, which can be comfortably wrong.

The one check none of these tools runs, and who sells it

Every tool on this page measures a search engine. None of them measures the other place your buyer now asks, which is an assistant: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each asker, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index a crawler can read to find out whose name came up. Tracking an assistant is a fifth job, and no tool in the four rows above takes a reading of it, because there is no result page to read.

AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else. We are not an SEO tool and we are not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler or a keyword index should buy one of the tools named above instead. What we do is ask your buyer question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. Our own figures, from the rendered text of our llms.txt read on 21 October 2026: one credit is one buyer question on one app once, most checks cost one credit and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. The published US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and that same file says SEO Start watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand harvest rather than an engine watch. The first tier that watches the five engines is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, so we are not going to convert it for you.

Where the tools on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on 21 October 2026, tracks prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all, and its page publishes an overage price of $0.020 per check and the cost of a Claude update at 8 checks, which is a level of unit disclosure worth holding every vendor to, us included. Semrush, whose SEO and AI search pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside the suite you may already be paying for, with 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day on its Starter tier. Moz now publishes AI Explorer, described on moz.com as showing what the top AI agents say about your brand. If you already pay one of those three, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it. We are the single purpose option for somebody who does not want a suite.

A cadence that works and does not cost anything

No competitor price table is reproduced on this page. What is quoted instead is the published limit that sets a tier, because a limit is the vendor's own statement of what you get and it does not move with the country you are reading from. That matters more than it sounds: on 21 October 2026 a fetch of one vendor's US pricing page from this machine returned Indian rupee prices, because the request left from an Indian address. A 200 response can still be the wrong page.

Weekly: coverage, and anything your crawl flagged. Monthly: key events by landing page, and average position for your twenty priority phrases. Quarterly: a full crawl compared with the last one, and an export of everything you would lose if you cancelled a subscription.

If positions are the specific job you came for, the product differences there are sharper than they look: SEO rank checker tools compared, and what a position number still tells you. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,169 page bodies in all, against 2,082 live pages, and 935 of them, 44.9 percent, had no inbound link from any of those bodies. That figure is an upper bound rather than a count. No other page on this site links to the one above.

Questions about SEO tracking

What is the difference between SEO tracking and rank tracking?

Rank tracking is one of the four jobs. SEO tracking, used properly, includes indexing, outcomes and change, and those three are where the surprises come from.

How often should positions be checked?

Weekly is plenty for almost everybody, and daily mostly buys noise you will react to. Check daily only during a migration or a recovery.

Can I track SEO for free?

Three of the four jobs, yes, permanently. Scheduled crawling is the one that usually costs money, and a monthly crawl you run by hand is a fair substitute.

Why did my tracked positions not move when traffic fell?

Usually because the cause was coverage, click through rate or a change in what the result page looks like, none of which a position number contains.

How many keywords should I track?

Twenty you could act on beats two thousand you scroll past. Tool tiers are sold on keyword counts, so this decision is also the one that sets your bill.
