Semrush trial: what the free week covers, and a day by day plan to get a decision out of it
How the trial and the free plan differ, what to export before the week ends, and the seven day schedule that answers the buying question.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026
As published on the Semrush pricing page on 9 October 2026, Semrush offers a free seven day trial with the line "Try Semrush free for seven days. Cancel anytime." The trial button appears on the paid tiers, card details are required to start it, and it can be cancelled inside the period. Separately there is a plan called Free, described as being for trying out the platform, which needs no card and allows one demo project and ten reports a day. Those are two different things, and knowing which you want saves a week. This page sets out the difference, then gives a day by day plan for turning seven days into a decision.
The trial and the free plan are not the same
| The seven day trial | The Free plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Card needed | Yes | No, the page states no credit card required |
| Access | The features of the tier you selected | One demo project and ten reports a day across the main tools |
| Runs for | Seven days, then billing starts unless cancelled | Indefinitely |
| Good for | A full audit, a competitor keyword set and a real workflow test | Occasional single checks and seeing the interface |
| Limits | The tier's own project, keyword and report limits | The daily report cap, which is reached quickly in a working session |
Confirm the current tier names, inclusions and trial terms on the pricing page itself before you start, because the line up is revised. Our page on the published plans and the limits that set your cost explains which limits decide the tier you need.
Prepare before you start the clock
A trial week is short, and most of it gets wasted on setup. Do this the day before you sign up, so day one begins with real work.
- Write down the exact domain, with and without the www prefix, and every subdomain you want crawled.
- Pick three competitors by name and URL. Not aspirational ones, the three you actually lose deals to.
- Export the last twelve months of queries and pages from Search Console, so you have your own truth to compare against the tool's estimates.
- List the ten commercial queries that matter most to your revenue.
- Write the one question the trial has to answer. "Can this replace two of my current tools" is a good one. "Is Semrush good" is not.
- Block two hours a day in your calendar. A trial squeezed between meetings produces screenshots and no decision.
The seven day plan
Day one, set up and get the crawl running
Create the project for your domain, connect Search Console and Analytics, and start the site audit crawl. Crawls take time, so start it first and read it tomorrow. While it runs, pull the domain overview for your site and each of the three competitors and note the headline differences.
Day two, read the audit and fix something
Work through the audit by severity rather than by count. Pick the two issues that affect the most revenue generating pages and fix them this week, because the real test of a tool is whether it changes what you do. Export the full issue list.
Day three, competitor keywords
This is the job the subscription exists for. Run organic research on each competitor, then the keyword gap report between your domain and all three. You are looking for terms where competitors rank and you have no page at all. Export the gap list and tag the rows you intend to act on.
Day four, build the keyword set
Use the keyword research tool to expand the ten commercial queries into a grouped set with volume and difficulty, and cross check a sample against your Search Console data and Keyword Planner. Export the grouped set. This file is worth the week on its own, because it is the input to the next six months of content.
Day five, links
Run the backlink gap against the three competitors and the backlink audit on your own domain. Export the list of domains linking to competitors and not to you, and sort it into reachable types: directories, associations, suppliers, local press, event pages. Reachable rows are the only ones worth keeping.
Day six, the workflow test
Set up position tracking for the ten queries, build the report you would actually send to a client or a manager, and schedule it. Then ask the honest question: in a normal month, which of these screens would you open, and which current tool does this replace. A platform you use two screens of is still a sound purchase if those two screens are the keyword gap and the audit.
Day seven, decide
Decide and act the same day. Either convert, or cancel and keep working from the exports. Both are good outcomes. The bad outcome is forgetting, which is why the cancellation date goes in your calendar on day one.
What to export before the week ends
- The full site audit issue list, with URLs.
- Your own organic positions, as a baseline you can compare against later.
- The keyword gap against all three competitors.
- Your grouped keyword set with volume and difficulty.
- The backlink gap list, filtered to reachable domains.
- Each competitor's top pages by estimated traffic, which tells you what content earns in your market.
Those six files support a quarter of work with no subscription at all. Save them somewhere shared rather than in your downloads folder.
Cancelling cleanly
Cancellation is handled in your own account settings under subscription. Do it at least a day before the trial ends, in your own time zone, and keep the confirmation email. Your exports stay with you. If you later subscribe, projects you created are still there.

What gets asked about semrush trial
Does the Semrush trial need a credit card?
Yes. The trial starts from the paid tiers and requires card details, and the pricing page states that it can be cancelled at any time during the period. The separate Free plan requires no card.
How long is the trial?
The pricing page states seven days as at 9 October 2026. Offers change, so read the terms on the page at the moment you sign up rather than relying on any third party description.
Can I get a second trial?
Trials are offered per customer, so plan on having one. If you need a second look later, the Free plan covers the interface and a single project without any commitment.
Which tier should I trial?
Trial the tier you would actually buy. Trialling the top tier and subscribing to the entry one leads to a purchase that lacks the reports you based the decision on. Check the project, keyword and report limits against the work you do in a month.
What does the free plan let me do?
As published, one demo project and ten reports a day across the main tools, plus the AI visibility features listed on the plan. That is enough for an occasional domain check and not enough for a working audit, which is what the trial is for.
Is a trial enough to judge an SEO platform?
Seven days is enough if you arrive prepared and test one real workflow end to end. The method generalises: our page on AI SEO software and a two week trial that settles it uses the same approach across tool categories.

- Keyword research in five steps
- The Search Console reports that matter
One report to run in the same week
A trial week is short, so spend it on reports that earn their place. Alongside keyword and site audit reports, run one more check outside any SEO tool: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity your five buyer questions and record who is named.
That puts two kinds of evidence on the table when the trial ends, search data and assistant answers. AI Knows Us does the second part with the cited sources included, which makes the decision about paying clearer.
