SEO and digital marketing in Bangkok and Thailand: Thai and English demand, the PDPA and the 7% VAT line on your ads
How a business in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya or Phuket should choose an SEO agency, a social media agency or a digital marketing agency, built on the Personal Data Protection Act, Google's Thai tax and Shopping rules and StatCounter's September 2026 figures, read on 22 October 2026.

To choose an SEO agency or a digital marketing agency in Bangkok, first decide whether your buyers search in Thai, in English, or both, because that decides who should write your pages. Google handles more than 99% of searches in Thailand, so SEO here is Google SEO. Then check two Thai rules that touch every campaign: the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), which gives people the right to object to direct marketing, and Google's 7% VAT on ads for Thai billing addresses without a VAT ID. A good agency lists the work it will do each month, keeps every account in your company's name, and does not promise a ranking.
We read the sources on this page on 22 October 2026. Thai-speaking readers can use our Thai guides to choosing an SEO consultant or company in Thailand and to hiring an online marketing agency.
Where Thai customers search and scroll
StatCounter's figures for September 2026 put Google at 99.37% of search in Thailand and Bing at 0.53%. No other engine registers above a fraction of a percent.
For social media, the same month shows Facebook sending 62.86% of the visits that social networks send to websites, YouTube 26.29%, X (Twitter) 6.83% and Instagram 2.21%. These figures count clicks out to websites only. They do not count LINE, the chat app many Thai businesses use for orders and bookings, or TikTok viewing that stays inside the app. Ask any agency how it will count an enquiry that starts on Facebook and finishes in a LINE chat.
What a Bangkok SEO agency should deliver
Google lists the services an SEO provider can usefully offer: a review of your site's content or structure, technical advice on hosting, redirects, error pages and JavaScript, content development, keyword research, SEO training, and expertise in specific markets and geographies. Put that list beside every proposal and ask which lines are included each month, who does them and what you will receive. The same Google page says to grant only read access to Search Console during an audit, and that "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
Thai pages, English pages, or both
Many Bangkok firms sell to Thai customers, foreign residents and overseas buyers at once. Each group searches in its own language with its own phrasing, so research each language separately in Keyword Planner, build a page per language where there is demand, and link the versions. Ask who writes the Thai, and whether that person writes from your brief rather than translating finished English. Our guide to multilingual SEO architecture sets out the markup.
Local SEO in Bangkok and across Thailand
For shops, clinics, hotels and restaurants, local search is the Google Business Profile. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. In a city the size of Bangkok, distance matters: a profile for each real branch, with accurate hours and replies to reviews, does more than one profile for the head office. Google also says a virtual office is not eligible for a profile. Our guide to local SEO from the profile to the map pack covers the method.
Social media and digital marketing agencies
Split a "digital marketing" package before you compare quotes: social media management, paid social, Google Ads, content and influencer work are bought and judged differently. Ask for the media spend to be shown apart from the agency fee, and keep the Google Ads account, Meta Business account, LINE Official Account and analytics in your company's name. If an influencer agency books creators for you, the contract should say how paid posts will be labelled and who checks it.
Google Ads from Thailand: the VAT line
Google's tax help page says that from 1 September 2021, 7% VAT applies to Google Ads customers with billing addresses in Thailand who have not added a 13-digit Thai VAT ID to their payments profile. When an agency quotes a monthly media budget, ask whose company is on the account, whether the VAT ID has been added, and whether the 7% is inside the figure. For an online shop, Google's Merchant Center lists Thailand as a supported country, Thai as a supported language, and the Shopping tab as available to users in Thailand. Our guide on agency, freelancer or in-house for Google Ads helps decide who should run it.
The PDPA and your customer data
The Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019) was published in the Government Gazette on 27 May 2019. We read an unofficial English translation; the Thai text is the one that counts. The sections that matter for marketing:
- Consent (section 19). A data controller must not collect, use or disclose personal data unless the person has consented before or at the time of collection, except where the Act or another law allows it.
- Notice (section 23). When collecting data, the controller must tell the person the purpose and the other details the section lists, before or at the time of collection.
- Direct marketing (section 32). A person has the right to object at any time when their data is used for direct marketing, and the controller must then stop.
- Breaches (section 37). The controller must notify the Office of a personal data breach without delay and, where feasible, within 72 hours of becoming aware of it, unless the breach is unlikely to put people's rights at risk.
Before customer lists are uploaded to an ad platform, check that customers were told this use, and that people who objected are removed. Your agency contract should say who is the controller, who is the processor and who reports a breach.
Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket and Samui
Keyword Planner shows "seo chiang mai" at around 210 searches a month in Thailand, against 590 for "seo agency bangkok" and 210 for "seo agency thailand". Pattaya phrases show around 40, and Phuket and Samui around 10 each. Outside Bangkok, many businesses that buy SEO serve visitors as well as locals, which changes the brief in three ways.
- Language. A hotel, tour operator or clinic in Chiang Mai, Pattaya or Phuket may need English pages and pages in its visitors' languages as well as Thai. Check demand for each language in Keyword Planner before paying for translations.
- Location. A visitor searches from abroad before the trip and nearby once they arrive. Your Business Profile serves the second search; pages written for the trip serve the first.
- Reviews. Visitors read reviews on Google and on travel sites. Reply to them, and never buy them: Google's policies forbid fake engagement.
Small local agencies in these cities can know their market well; a Bangkok agency may have a larger team. Either can work, so judge each on the same written scope.
Questions about SEO and digital marketing in Thailand
Do we need Thai content if our customers speak English?
Check demand in each language in Keyword Planner for Thailand first. If Thai buyers search for what you sell, build Thai pages written natively, and make sure someone can reply in Thai.
Does the 7% VAT apply to our Google Ads spend?
Google's tax page says it applies to customers with Thai billing addresses who have not added a 13-digit Thai VAT ID. Ask your agency which applies to your account.
Can we use our customer list for ads and LINE messages?
Only in line with the PDPA: people must have been told the purpose, and anyone who objects to direct marketing under section 32 must be removed.
Should we hire a Bangkok agency or a local one in Chiang Mai or Phuket?
Either can do the work. Send the same written scope to both and compare the named people, the monthly work lines and who owns the accounts.
When can we judge whether an SEO agency in Thailand is working?
Judge it on what is measured: the agreed work delivered, impressions and positions in Search Console, enquiries by page, and calls from the Business Profile. Google's SEO Starter Guide says "Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months." The outcome depends on competition, your offer and your budget.
When a Thai buyer asks an assistant instead
A business owner in Bangkok can ask ChatGPT or Gemini, in Thai or English, for "a good SEO agency in Bangkok for a dental clinic" and get three names, and the Thai and English answers can name different firms. Those names come from directories, reviews and the pages the assistant can read. AI Knows Us is a different kind of service from an agency: it asks buyer questions like these on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and shows a Thai business which companies get named and why.
