Social media advertising cost, the three parts of the bill and why cheap reach is the most expensive thing you can buy

Media, production and management are three separate costs with three separate suppliers, and only one of them is set by an auction.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Social media advertising cost is three bills that arrive looking like one. Media spend is what the platform charges to show your advertisement, set by an auction and paid to the platform. Production is what it costs to make what gets shown, paid to whoever makes it. Management is what it costs to run, paid to an agency, a freelancer or your own team. Two quotes for the same campaign can be three times apart because one includes two of these and the other includes all three, and neither quote is wrong.

Verified against Google's India geo target alone on 22 October 2026, social media advertising cost draws 70 searches a month in India. This page is about the media half, which is the part nobody can quote you in advance, and about how the other two attach to it. For the ongoing fee side of an Indian package specifically, our page on social media marketing prices in India and how to read a package before you buy it covers that and this page will not duplicate it.

The three parts, and who sets each one

The one to settle in writing first is management, because a fee charged as a percentage of media spend rewards spending more and a flat fee does not. Neither is dishonest and they pull in different directions, so the arrangement should match what you want the supplier optimising for.

The three media numbers on any report

  • Cost per thousand impressions. What it costs to be shown a thousand times to the audience you picked. This is the rawest number and the least useful on its own.
  • Cost per click. What a visit costs, which is the cost per thousand divided by the share of people who clicked. A low cost per thousand with a very low click rate produces an expensive click.
  • Cost per result. What the outcome you actually asked for costs, whether that is a lead, a purchase or a message. This is the only one of the three that belongs in a decision.

Convert between them before comparing anything. A cost per thousand of 100 at a one per cent click rate is an effective 10 a click; at a quarter of a per cent it is 40. Platforms that look cheap on reach frequently are not cheap on results, and the arithmetic takes one line.

Why cheap reach is the trap in this market

Reach on social platforms in India is inexpensive by world standards, and that is a genuine advantage used correctly and a genuine hazard used carelessly. A small budget buys a very large number of impressions, the report looks impressive, and nothing happens.

Three reasons, and all three are mechanical.

  • You are buying attention, not intention. Somebody scrolling a feed did not come looking for your category. Search advertising intercepts a stated need, social advertising creates one, and the second takes more exposures and a better reason to act.
  • A broad audience makes the cheapest impressions the least useful. The auction will happily find you the people who are cheapest to reach, and cheapest usually means least contested, which often means least likely to buy. Narrowing the audience raises the cost per thousand and can lower the cost per result.
  • The objective you choose decides what the platform optimises towards. Ask for reach and you will get reach, extremely efficiently. Ask for a conversion and the platform enters you into different auctions at a higher price with a better chance of the thing you wanted.

That third point is the most common and most expensive error on a first campaign. The objective is not a label on the campaign, it is the instruction.

What the platform needs before it can be efficient

Automated delivery predicts who will act, and a prediction needs examples. That is why a campaign gets better after a while rather than immediately, and why very small budgets stay inefficient.

  • Install and verify conversion tracking first. Without it, the platform is optimising towards clicks and you are paying for an outcome nobody is aiming at.
  • Pick one conversion event that correlates with revenue. If the tracked event is easy to produce, the system will produce a great many of them cheaply and your sales will not move.
  • Give it enough budget to collect a meaningful number of those events inside the learning window. Splitting a small budget across six audiences gives each one too little data to learn from, which is how a test returns six inconclusive results instead of one usable one.

Sizing a first test

Four lines, using your own numbers in place of these.

  • Decide what a result is worth. Gross margin on a customer, multiplied by the share of leads that become customers. 6,000 of margin at a one in six lead to customer rate makes a lead worth 1,000.
  • Decide how many results you need to believe the answer. A handful is noise. Pick the number you would be willing to act on.
  • Multiply. Results wanted times what you can afford per result gives the media budget for the test.
  • Add production and management separately and look at the total. If the total is more than you want to risk on one test, narrow the audience and the geography rather than cutting the media budget below the level that can learn.

Run it for a fixed window decided in advance, change nothing inside the window unless something is broken, and judge it on cost per result. Platform choice sits underneath all of this and is a separate decision driven mostly by who you can actually target, which we rank in the best social media advertising platforms to buy on, ranked by what each one lets you target.

The costs that are not on the quote

  • Creative refresh. Performance decays as an audience sees the same thing repeatedly, so production is a recurring cost and not a one off. Budget for new assets at a stated interval rather than discovering the need when results fall.
  • Landing page work. Traffic sent to a page that does not answer the advertisement wastes the media spend behind it, and fixing the page costs nothing in media and improves every number downstream.
  • The cost of responding. Enquiries from social advertising arrive fast and go cold fast. If nobody answers within the hour, you are buying leads and discarding a share of them, which is a real cost sitting outside the advertising budget entirely.
  • Taxes and platform charges on media, which land on the invoice rather than in the campaign report, so a budget set from the report alone is short.

Questions about what social media advertising costs

How much should a small business spend on social advertising

Enough to produce a number of results you would act on, which comes out of your own margin and conversion rates rather than a published minimum. Narrow the audience and the geography before cutting the budget below that level, because an underfunded test returns nothing you can use.

Why is my cost per thousand impressions so low and nothing is happening

Because reach is the cheapest thing on offer and the least connected to a purchase. Check which objective the campaign is set to, then read the cost per result rather than the cost per thousand.

Is an agency fee as a percentage of spend fair

It is common and it rewards larger spend, so it suits a mature account with a working formula. A flat fee suits a small or testing account better, because the supplier is paid for the work rather than for the size of the media bill. Settle which one before the first invoice.

Does narrowing my audience make advertising more expensive

It usually raises the cost per thousand and can lower the cost per result, which is the number that matters. A broad audience lets the auction find the cheapest people to reach, and cheapest to reach and most likely to buy are rarely the same group.

How long before a campaign settles

Long enough for the system to collect a meaningful number of your chosen conversion events. Decide the window and the event count before launch, and avoid editing targeting or budgets inside it, because each change restarts the learning.

Should production be in the same contract as management

Keep them as separate line items even with one supplier, so you can see what you are paying for creative and what for running the account. The two scale differently and bundling them hides which one to increase when results improve.

The recommendation nobody bid for

Every number here is produced by an auction, which means somebody sold you attention and counted it. There is a route to a buyer now where no auction runs at all. A person asks an assistant which supplier to use for something, and the answer names two or three businesses. No campaign reached them, no creative was refreshed, no cost per result was reported, and the businesses named did not outbid anybody. Whether yours is among them is not decided by budget, and it is not invisible either, because the question can simply be asked and the answer recorded. AI Knows Us does that across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, with the sources behind each answer, which is the only way to manage a placement that no platform is selling.
