Where an Indian buyer starts looking for a supplier, and which channel decides what
Six places an Indian business is found, what each one is actually good at, and the order to build them in.

An Indian buyer looking for a supplier almost never starts in one place and finishes there. A purchase manager in Pune asks two colleagues, searches Google for the category, opens two websites, checks whether the firm has a GST number and a landline, and then sends a WhatsApp message asking for a rate. Each of those steps does a different job. Referral decides who gets considered, search decides who gets added to the list, the website decides who survives the first look, and WhatsApp decides who replies first and wins the conversation. A seller who treats all four as one thing called marketing usually over invests in the step that was never the bottleneck.
This page sorts the discovery channels an Indian business is found through, says what each one can and cannot do, and gives an order to build them in. It is written for a seller deciding where the next rupee goes, not for a buyer.
The six places you are found, and the job each one does
| Channel | What it decides | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Referral and reference | Whether you are on the list at all | Scale beyond the people who already know you |
| Google search, including the maps pack | Whether you are added by a buyer who has never heard of you | Reach a buyer who asks a person instead of a search box |
| Your own website | Whether you survive the first thirty seconds | Create demand on its own |
| WhatsApp Business and the phone | Who replies first, and who gets the order | Introduce you to anybody new |
| Instagram and short video | Whether a consumer brand is remembered and trusted | Reach an industrial buyer who is not on it |
| Marketplaces and listing sites | Whether you appear where a buyer is already transacting | Give you the customer relationship or the margin |
Referral is still first, and it is the one you can build deliberately
Most Indian B2B business still starts with a name somebody gave. That is not a reason to leave it to chance. The deliberate version is a short, current list of references by sector, with the client's permission to be called, and a one page case note per sector saying what the work was and what changed. A buyer who has your name from a colleague will still look you up, which is why the next three channels matter.
Google decides who gets added to a list that already exists
Search is where a buyer who has no referral finds a third name to compare against the two they were given. For a local or service business that means a Google Business Profile with the real address, the real hours and photographs of the actual premises, plus a page per service rather than one page listing twelve. For a manufacturer it means the part number, the standard and the specification in text on the page, because that is what an industrial buyer types. Our page on search for Indian manufacturers takes that apart by part number and standard.
WhatsApp is a reply channel, not a discovery channel, and the distinction is the money
WhatsApp Business is the most powerful conversion tool most Indian sellers have and it finds nobody. It closes what another channel opened. The practical consequences are concrete. Put the number on every page as a click to chat link so the buyer does not have to copy it. Answer inside the working day, because the firm that replies first usually gets the enquiry. Keep a catalogue inside the business profile so a price question can be answered with a document rather than a promise to send one. And keep the enquiry out of one person's personal phone, because a lead that lives in a sales executive's chat history leaves with them.
Bulk messaging is a separate thing from a reply, and it is governed by registration and template rules. Our page on bulk messaging registration, headers and consent covers what a sender has to register before the first campaign.
Instagram, and the buyer it is right for
For a consumer brand, a clinic, a restaurant, a salon, a studio or a school, Instagram is where trust is built before anybody calls, and the proof is the comment section rather than the follower count. For a bearing distributor, a chemicals trader, a logistics firm or an industrial fabricator it is a brand asset and almost never the enquiry source. The test is simple. Ask five recent customers where they first saw you. If none of them says Instagram, it is not your discovery channel yet and the budget belongs elsewhere.
Marketplaces, and the margin question nobody asks early enough
IndiaMART, a marketplace catalogue, a food delivery listing or a retail platform puts you where a buyer is already transacting, which is worth real money. It also means the platform owns the customer, sets the discount and decides the ranking. The workable position for most Indian sellers is to be on the platform for reach and to spend the same month making their own site the place a returning customer buys from, so the second order carries full margin. Our guide to getting listed on IndiaMART covers the listing itself, and the marketplace ad account and listing rules covers who should hold the account.
The order to build them in
- Fix the reply first. A WhatsApp number that answers, a phone that is picked up, and one person accountable for enquiries. This costs nothing and it is where most leaks are.
- Then the website. One page per service or product family, the price or the price range, the city, the GST number, and a form that lands in a place somebody reads.
- Then Google. The business profile, then the service pages, then the category pages a buyer searches.
- Then one paid channel, judged on cost per qualified enquiry rather than on impressions.
- Then the platforms and the marketplaces, chosen for the one where your buyers already transact.
- Then brand, in whichever surface your own customers told you they watch.
Questions Indian sellers ask about where buyers find them
Should a small Indian business build a website or just use WhatsApp and Instagram
Build the website, because the other two cannot be searched, cannot be cited by anything, and belong to somebody else. A five page site with a page per service, your city, your prices or price ranges and your contact details does work that a social profile cannot do, and it is the thing every other channel points at.
Do Indian buyers really use Google when the category is local
They use Google and a person, usually in that order for the shortlist and the other order for the decision. The practical reading is that a buyer who heard your name from a colleague will still search it, so your own name is the first search term you need to win.
How do I find out which channel my own customers came from
Ask them, on the call, in one sentence, and write the answer in the same place every time. Thirty answers collected over a month beat any published channel study, because the question is about your category and your city. Platform reports cannot see a phone call or a WhatsApp message, which is where a large share of Indian enquiries arrive.
Is a listing site worth paying for in India
It is worth paying for when your buyers' questions name a place and a service, because that is the shape of question a listing page matches. It is worth much less when they ask about a problem, a price or a comparison. Decide it by writing down ten questions your buyers actually ask and seeing how many of them a listing page could answer.
What is the cheapest change with the biggest effect
Answering faster. Across almost every Indian category the firm that replies within the hour is in a two horse race, and the firm that replies the next morning is quoting against a decision that has already been made.
One channel on this list has no dashboard yet
There is a seventh place a buyer now starts, and it does not appear in any analytics report. A purchase manager types the whole requirement into ChatGPT or Gemini and reads back a short list of firms, a price direction and a set of questions to ask. That answer is assembled from whatever the web currently says about your category, so it is a channel you can influence and cannot see. When we put 198 India buying questions to ChatGPT and Gemini on 22 October 2026, 33 batches and 50 blind readings with the country fixed in the wording of every question, an Indian agency was named in the answer text in 17 of them, and 91.1 per cent of the 1,606 sources those answers used were pages on a company's own website. Reading that answer for your own category is the measurement AI Knows Us was built to run, and the 597 reading benchmark across three markets is the method published in full.
