Whitespark is a local SEO company that sells software for tracking local rankings, finding citations, managing Google Business Profiles and getting reviews, plus done-for-you listings and SEO services. It also publishes the Local Search Ranking Factors report, a survey of local search experts that many in the industry use as a reference. If you search "Whitespark local SEO", you are usually trying to work out which of those products you need. This page sets out each one as described on whitespark.ca on 22 October 2026, what job it does, and when another route is enough.
The software, product by product
| Product | What Whitespark says it does | The job it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Local Rank Tracker | Tracks Local Packs, Maps and organic results in Google and Bing, desktop and mobile, across zip codes or coordinates | Reporting rankings over time for chosen keywords and locations |
| Local Ranking Grids | Geo-grid rank tracking across up to 225 points | Seeing how rankings change across a city, street by street |
| Local Citation Finder | Finds the citations your top ranked competitors have and you lack, and tracks your existing ones | Building and cleaning up directory and web mentions |
| Local Platform | Alerts you when Google or anyone else changes your Google Business Profile, and lets you reject the change | Protecting profile details, especially across many locations |
| Reputation Builder | Automated review requests | Steady review collection |
Whitespark also offers free tools: a Review Checker, a Google Review Link Generator, a Local Ranking Checker and a Freshness Distance Calculator. If you only need a direct link that opens the Google review box, the free generator does that; our walkthrough of Whitespark's Google review link generator covers the one case where it does not work.
Plans are priced per product, and the rank tracker and grids pages each advertise a free start. Prices change, so read the current figures on whitespark.ca/pricing before you budget.
The free guides worth reading first
Before buying anything, the resources section of whitespark.ca is worth an hour. It lists a guide to Google Business Profile optimisation, a Local Search Ecosystem map showing how data flows between directories and search engines, and a list of top local citation sources by country. The country list is the useful one for a business outside North America, because the directories that matter differ from market to market. Use these to build your own checklist, then decide whether a tool or a service would save you time.
The services
Alongside the software, Whitespark sells work done by its team: a Listings Service (finding, fixing and building citations), local SEO services, a Google Business Profile reinstatement service for suspended profiles, a service it positions as a Yext replacement, and multi-location SEO for franchises and enterprises. The difference from the software is simple. The tools tell you what is wrong; the services fix it for you.
The Local Search Ranking Factors report
The report is the part of Whitespark many people know first. Its 2026 edition, by Darren Shaw, was published on 6 November 2025. Whitespark says the survey was started by David Mihm in 2008 and taken over by Darren Shaw in 2017, and that it invited 47 local search experts to score 187 factors. It ranks factors separately for the local pack and Maps, local organic results, Local Services Ads, conversion, negative factors and suspension risk.
New in this edition is a list of AI search visibility factors. The top five, as ranked by the contributors, were:
- Presence of the business on expert-curated "best of" and similar lists
- A dedicated page for each service
- Prominence on key industry-relevant domains
- Quality and authority of unstructured citations, such as newspaper articles, blog posts, government sites and industry associations
- Authority of the third-party sites where your reviews appear
The report's introduction argues that local discovery still happens mainly in Google's local results, while noting that AI tools are changing how people research. Read it as expert opinion from a survey, which is what it is. It is a useful checklist, and the scores are a ranking of views rather than measured effects.
Which part do you actually need?
A single-location business doing its own local SEO
Start free. Google Business Profile and Search Console show your calls, direction requests and search queries. Use a free rank check now and then. Pay for a rank tracker only when you want a dated record to judge whether your work is moving anything.
A business with messy listings
If your name, address or phone number differ across directories, citation cleanup is the job. You can do it by hand using a citation audit, or pay for a tool or listings service to find the mentions. Our guide to local citations and NAP consistency shows how to fix the source first, which is what makes any cleanup last.
An agency or a multi-location brand
This is where Whitespark's software is aimed: grids for reporting to clients, profile change alerts across many locations, and citation tracking at scale. Compare it with other suites on the specific job. Our comparison of local SEO tools puts the main options side by side, and the Pleper plan guide covers a lower cost alternative.
How to judge a local SEO tool in a week
- Pick five keywords and two locations you know well, and check whether the tool's ranks match what you see on a phone at that spot.
- Run a citation scan and check ten results by hand: are they real, live and about your business?
- Export a report and ask whether a client or owner would understand it without you.
- Check how many locations and keywords the plan you would actually buy allows.
Questions about Whitespark local SEO
Is Whitespark software or an agency?
Both. It sells self-serve tools and also done-for-you listings, SEO and profile reinstatement services.
Is the Local Search Ranking Factors report free?
Yes, it is published on whitespark.ca, and Whitespark also offers a plain-text version.
Does Whitespark track Bing as well as Google?
Its Local Rank Tracker page says it tracks Google and Bing, on desktop and mobile.
Do I need a geo-grid tracker?
Only if you serve a wide area and need to know where in it you rank. A single shop with a small catchment can usually skip it.
Will citations alone lift my local rankings?
Citations support accuracy and trust, but Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and popularity. Your profile, reviews and website pages carry much of the weight.
The local answer that is not on a map
Whitespark's own experts now rank "best of" lists, service pages and third-party mentions as the top factors for appearing in AI answers. That is worth acting on, and it raises a practical question rank grids cannot answer: when someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini for the best provider near them, is your business named? AI Knows Us asks those assistants the local questions your customers ask and reports which businesses they name, so you can see whether the work on lists and mentions is reaching the answer.
