Best digital marketing compared, the six things the phrase can mean and how to pick one

Nobody buys digital marketing. They buy one of six quite different things, at six different prices, from six different kinds of supplier. Here is which one you are actually shopping for.

"Best digital marketing" is a search with no object in it, and that is why every answer to it is vague. Nobody buys digital marketing. They buy one of six things, and naming which one makes the decision almost mechanical.

The six things, and what each one costs to find out

One, a channel run for you. You know which channel is underperforming and you want somebody competent on it. You are buying an operator, priced monthly, and the thing to judge is their diagnosis rather than their deck.

Two, a plan. You have budget and no view on where to point it. You are buying consulting, priced per project, and you should expect to execute it yourself or pay separately for that.

Three, a team. You need design, development and media buying to happen together. You are buying an agency, and the fee model matters more than the capability list, because every agency can list every capability.

Four, software. You have people and you need data or automation. You are buying a tool, and the thing that decides your bill is the limit the vendor prices on, which is usually volume of something rather than features.

Five, a hire. You want the capability permanently in house. You are buying a person, and a fractional senior person for two days a week is often the better first version of this.

Six, learning. You want to do it yourself. You are buying a course, and the only checkable things before you pay are who awards it, what level it is pitched at and how long it is.

Those six are not substitutes. They are answers to different questions, and the most common expensive mistake in this whole market is buying three when you needed two.

The channels, since they are the thing underneath all six

Whichever of the six you buy, it will operate on these, and it is worth knowing their shape.

Search, unpaid. Compounding, slow, the highest intent traffic there is, and it reports nothing useful for months. Judge it at two quarters, not at six weeks.

Search, paid. Instant, measurable, and it stops the day you stop paying. There is no published minimum spend. We read business.google.com/us/google-ads/ on 21 October 2026 and it states only that "New advertisers will receive an ad credit after meeting the minimum spend requirement for the selected offer", without naming the requirement, and its offer figures render as unfilled template placeholders rather than dollar amounts. The campaign types it names are Performance Max, Search, Shopping, Video Reach, Video View, Demand Gen and App.

Social, organic and paid. Organic social is a relationship channel and a slow one. Paid social creates demand rather than capturing it, which is a different job from paid search and a different measurement.

Email and your own list. Almost always the cheapest revenue in the building and almost always the last thing anybody tries.

Content networks. Reach is not the constraint here. Taboola's advertiser page, read at taboola.com/advertise on 21 October 2026, describes its product as "Performance AI with a global network of vetted publishers, reaching 600M daily active users", and publishes no minimum spend. If six hundred million daily users is available and your campaign still does not work, the inventory was never the problem.

The seventh thing, which is not on anybody's list yet

All six purchases above, and all five channels, assume a buyer who is choosing between options they can see. There is now a step before that.

A buyer asks an assistant who to buy from. The assistant names two or three businesses. That shortlist is set before any channel above gets a chance, and nothing in any of them reports it, because a buyer who never arrived is invisible to every analytics tool you own.

That one measurement is what AI Knows Us sells and the only thing we sell. We are not an agency, not a consultancy, not a course and not a channel. We put the buying questions your market actually asks to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and report which names come back and which do not.

Our own published position, on the criterion of what a buyer can verify before paying. At aiknowsus.com/llms.txt, read 21 October 2026, Growth at $299 a month publishes 100 buyer questions watched, 1,600 credits and all five engines, and it is the cheapest plan we publish that reads all five. SEO Start at $149 publishes 0 buyer questions, 0 credits and 0 engines, so it does not do this job and the entry price for this measurement is $299. Our pricing page renders six currencies. And since we are asking you to check claims, check ours too: our rendered pricing text publishes no SSO, no white label, no SOC 2, no ISO and no DPA.

Where to go, by branch

If you are buying a person rather than a firm, the four specialisms hiding behind one job title are at best digital marketing specialists compared. If you are buying a plan, how to tell a strategy from a deck is at best marketing strategy agencies compared. If what you want is a shop that can do ads end to end, the five kinds behind one phrase are at best digital marketing ad agency for your job.

And if you would rather learn it than buy it, the honest problem with every book in this category is set out at best digital marketing and SEO books, and the one problem every book in this category has. We link to that deliberately. When we measured inbound links across 2,286 stored page bodies on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to that one, and 939 of our 2,200 live pages were in the same position, 42.7 percent, an upper bound.
