Best SEO rank checker tools compared, and what a position number still tells you
Rank checker, rank tracker and ranking report are three names for one job with three price points. Here is which to buy, and the two numbers to report beside the position.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 21 October 2026
There are three products here and they are priced very differently. A one off rank checker tells you where you sit today for a phrase. A rank tracker records that daily or weekly for a list of phrases and draws the line. A ranking report packages the line for somebody who did not run the tool. Buying the third when you needed the first is how people end up with a subscription they open once a month.
The criterion on this page: what is the tool measuring, and is that measurement stable enough to make a decision on? Applied honestly, it puts free tools higher than their price suggests and it says something uncomfortable about the headline number all of them report.
The three products and who each one is for
| Product | What it gives you | Buy it if |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console performance report | Average position, impressions and clicks for the queries Google recorded you appearing for, free, from Google's own data | You want the truest available number. Average position is an average across every impression, which is exactly why it moves less dramatically than a tracker's line. |
| A dedicated rank tracker | Daily or weekly positions for a chosen list, by location and device, with history | Somebody asks you about specific phrases, or you work across cities where the result differs street by street. |
| A one off rank checker | Today's position for one phrase, usually free | You have a single question and no reporting obligation. Nothing wrong with the free answer here. |
Why positions are a weaker number than they were, stated carefully
A position assumes there is one list and everybody sees the same one. Results are personalised by location, device and history, which is why two trackers disagree and both are right about what they measured. Google's own documentation describes average position as an average across impressions, which is a more honest figure than a single snapshot and also a less dramatic one.
The second complication is what sits above the list. Google's performance report documentation, read on 21 October 2026, lists the search types you can filter by as web, broken into text based and multimodal, plus image, video and news. Neither AI Mode nor AI Overviews appears anywhere on that documentation page. So a reporting pack built only on positions is describing one part of what happens on the results page, and it should be labelled as that rather than as the whole picture.
The two numbers worth reporting beside the position
First, clicks on the pages you changed. A position that moved from 9 to 6 and produced no extra clicks is a number rather than an outcome, and Search Console gives you both halves for nothing. Second, pages indexed against pages you intended to index. A page that is not indexed has no position at all, and that is the failure a rank tracker is structurally unable to show you, because it reports where you are rather than whether you are there.
Report those two and the position becomes context instead of the headline, which is the right way round.
What to check before you pay for a tracker
Four things. How many keywords the tier includes, because that limit is what you are actually buying. Whether local tracking is at city or postcode level, which matters enormously for a business with one address. How often it refreshes, because daily and weekly are different products. And whether it exports, because a tracker whose data you cannot take out is a tracker you cannot leave.
The ranking question that no rank tracker answers
When somebody asks an assistant who to buy from, there is no list and no position. There is one answer, written for that asker, naming some businesses and not others. A tracker cannot report a rank in it because there is no rank to report, and that is a structural fact about the surface rather than a gap in anybody's product.
AI Knows Us measures the thing that replaces a position there: whether you are named. The questions are the ones your buyers ask, the apps are ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and the output is the set of names in each answer rather than a position in a list. The costing is public: a credit is one question on one app on one occasion, most checks spend one of them, and Claude spends three because Claude costs us more to run. We do not sell a rank tracker and this is not one, so for everything in the table above the picks are the answer. Ahrefs publishes a wider reading of the assistant surface than ours, covering AI Mode and Copilot which we do not read, with its own per engine cost of 8 checks per update for a Claude check stated on its Brand Radar page.
If the reason you are shopping for a tracker is that positions have slipped, the nine changes that actually move them are worth reading before the subscription: the nine changes that move positions, in the order to make them. Measured on 21 October 2026, 696 of the 1,655 tracked pages on this site had no durable inbound link; that page was one of them, at 430 searches a month.
What buyers ask about rank checkers and trackers
Why do two rank trackers show different positions?
Because each one queries from its own location, device profile and timing, and results are personalised. Pick one tool and judge movement within it rather than comparing two tools' absolute numbers, which is a comparison with no meaning.
Is Search Console average position the same as my rank?
No. It is the average position of your impressions across everywhere you appeared, which is a different and more honest statistic than one sampled snapshot. It will look lower than a tracker's number and it is not wrong.
How big should the tracked list be?
Fewer than you want to. Twenty phrases that map to pages you are working on beats four hundred you never read. The limit on the tier is the real product, so size it to the list you will actually look at weekly.
Do I need daily tracking?
Only if you ship changes daily or trade in a volatile market. Weekly is enough for most sites and it costs less, and it has the side benefit of hiding the noise that makes people react to nothing.
What replaces a position inside an AI answer?
Being named at all, and then being named with a reason. There is no list to be third in, so the measurement becomes how often your name appears in the answer to the question your buyer actually asks, which you can test by hand in each app before buying anything.
