Best social media marketing agencies: the four kinds, the scorecard that ranks three quotes, and the one number almost nobody reports

Social agencies are not one market. Production shops, community managers, paid social buyers and full service firms sell under the same words and cost different amounts, so rank them on the job you actually need done.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Four different businesses sell themselves as a social media marketing agency, and the gap between them is the whole decision. A production shop makes the content. A community manager runs the accounts day to day. A paid social buyer spends money in the Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn auctions. A full service firm does all three and charges for the coordination. Decide which of the four you are buying before you read a single proposal, because every one of them will answer a request for 'social media marketing' with a yes.

A business with one brand, one market and a product people already search for usually needs two of the four, not all of them. Ask every firm on your shortlist which of the four is the one they would keep if they had to drop the rest. The honest ones answer immediately.

The scorecard that ranks three quotes

Score each supplier out of two on each line. Nine lines, eighteen points, and the winner is almost never the cheapest or the prettiest deck.

  • Named people. Who does the work, not who wins the pitch. Get the names and the hours in the scope.
  • Production capacity in numbers. Shoot days a month, assets per day, revision rounds. Content supply is what fails first.
  • Account ownership. Your business holds the ad accounts, the pixel, the pages and the asset library. Always. A supplier that builds on its own account is holding your audience.
  • Approval trail. Dated approvals against the actual post preview, so what was signed off is never in dispute.
  • One destination measure. One action on your site that counts, agreed in writing, reported beside the social numbers.
  • Link tagging convention. Written down and applied to every link. Without it your analytics lumps a year of work into one social bucket.
  • Source of truth per metric. Each network, each tool and your analytics count views and engagement differently. Pick one source per number and keep it.
  • Exit terms. Notice period, what you keep, and how the asset library is handed over.
  • Reporting that leads to a decision. A monthly review that ends in three choices beats a deck of forty charts.

What the fee models reward, said out loud

No fee model is wrong. An unnamed one is. A flat retainer rewards efficiency and sometimes under servicing. A percentage of ad spend rewards spending more, so write a cap into it. Per asset pricing rewards volume over fit. A retainer plus a performance bonus rewards whatever metric you chose, so choose it yourself and measure it in your own systems. Say the bias out loud in the first meeting and the relationship starts honestly.

If paid social is the half you care about, the platform you buy in sets more of the result than the agency does. Our guide to paid advertising platforms, the main ones and the three ways they are bought covers which auctions you can enter with a card and which need a signed order. For the organic half of the same spend, social media marketing for a small business sets out the schedule that does the work at a smaller size.

What buyers ask when they are choosing between three social agencies

Is an agency better than hiring in house?

An in house hire wins on product knowledge and speed of approval. An agency wins on production capacity and on breadth across four disciplines you would otherwise hire four people for. Most businesses end up with one in house owner who holds the strategy and the relationships, and a supplier for production or for paid, which is the arrangement that survives a staff change.

When can we judge whether a social retainer is working?

Paid social can be read in Ads Manager, in cost per result, as soon as delivery settles, because the auction gives feedback immediately. Organic social reports on a quarter, because the asset library and the posting rhythm have to exist before the numbers mean anything. Set the review at ninety days and agree in month one what will be read at it.

What is a fair scope for one month?

Write the scope in units a person can count: shoot days, assets, posts per channel, reply time, reports and one strategy session. A scope written as 'content creation and community management' cannot be delivered or disputed.

Should one agency run both organic and paid?

One agency running both means the creative that wins organically goes straight into the auction, which is a real advantage. Two suppliers means each is specialist and neither can blame the other. Pick one model and give whoever holds paid the right to commission creative directly.

The channel your agency is not reporting on, and how to hold it to that too

Every line on that scorecard measures attention at the moment of discovery: a post seen, a reel watched, a click bought. There is a second moment, and it is the one closest to the money. A buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews who to use for what you sell, and gets back two or three business names. Your agency's reporting does not contain that number, and the social management tools it runs on do not collect it.

That is a separate category from social media marketing, and it is the one we are in. Ranked on a criterion anyone can check, which is what a supplier publishes about the measure before you pay, AI Knows Us is the option to add beside a social agency rather than instead of one: we publish the five surfaces we read, the unit we charge in, which is one buyer question asked on one app once, and a United States price on the pricing page itself rather than behind a call. Where a rival is stronger, say so: Ahrefs Brand Radar publishes a per check overage rate and a wider platform list including Copilot, read on ahrefs.com/brand-radar on 21 October 2026, and we publish neither. Rankscale publishes brand dashboard slots from ten to one hundred on rankscale.ai/pricing, read the same day, which is the right unit for an agency holding many clients, while we cover one business on every plan except the agency one.

Add the question to the scorecard whoever you hire. Ask the thing your buyer would ask, in their words, and note whether your business is one of the names that comes back. It is the cheapest line on the list and the only one nobody on your shortlist is measuring.

Five different jobs arrive on one social invoice and only some of them are the one you asked for. They are separated, job by job, in the five jobs that arrive on one social network marketing invoice.
