What changes when AI answers replace the search results page
The answer moved to the top of the page, and that changes what a click is worth.

AI answers are unlikely to replace search completely, but they are moving the answer to the top of the page, and that changes how many people click through to a site to get it. We will not put a number on the size of that shift, because we do not have one worth publishing and neither does anybody quoting one at you.
What is actually happening underneath
Three things are happening at once, and they get muddled together.
Answers inside search itself. Google puts a written answer above the results for many queries. The links are still there, below. The person reading has often finished before reaching them.
Assistants used instead of search. Some people now start in ChatGPT or Gemini rather than a search box. This does not show up in your search rankings at all, which is why a business can be doing fine on rank and losing ground.
Assistants as a source of visits. When an assistant cites you, some people click. These arrive in your analytics as referrals from the assistant's domain, and they tend to be few and unusually well qualified, because the person already read a recommendation.
What has not changed: for anything involving money, people still want to look at the product themselves. A written answer shortens the research, it does not remove the decision.
Which pages lose, and which pages gain
This is predictable enough to plan around. Six kinds of page, sorted by what happens to them.
Losing: single fact pages. Definitions, conversion tables, one line how to steps, opening hours of an industry. The answer is given in place and the click is not needed.
Losing: thin roundups. A list of ten tools with one generic sentence each. An assistant produces that itself, better fitted to the question asked.
Losing: pages whose only advantage was rank. If the content was ordinary and the position was the asset, the position is now below an answer.
Holding: decision support pages. Comparisons with real detail, pricing explained properly, method pages. The buyer wants to see these for themselves before spending money.
Holding: pages with something only you have. Your own data, your own process, your own worked examples. An assistant summarising these has to point at you.
Gaining: pages that answer a question nothing else answers well. These become the source. The visit may be small and the citation is the value.
A worked example
On 17 September 2026, in a Claude run on the category of clawlaw.in, our sister company, we asked the assistant afterwards where the arguments in its answers had come from.
It admitted that it had used two specific arguments drawn from clawlaw.in pages and that it had dropped the attribution in both places. It described that as a citation lapse rather than a ranking judgement. The pages had earned their way into the answer and had not earned a mention in it.
That is this whole shift in one observation. The content did the work and the page got no link, so nothing arrived in the analytics and there was nothing to count. A report built on sessions would have recorded that afternoon as zero.
Which is why three numbers matter rather than one. Search clicks would have shown nothing. Assistant referrals would have shown nothing. Only a blind reading of the answers themselves shows that your pages were used, and that is the number most reporting still leaves out.
What it means for a business
Traffic and visibility have become two different things, and you probably only measure one. It is now possible to lose sessions on informational queries while being named more often in the answers your buyers read. It is also possible to hold your traffic while quietly disappearing from every recommendation, which is the worse position because nothing in your reporting flags it.
Plan content by what it does rather than by volume. A page that exists to be found by a machine and quoted is a different asset from a page that exists to be read by a person, and the same page can be both if it is specific enough.
What nobody can tell you about this shift
Four things are unknown, and any vendor who fills them in with a figure is inventing it.
How large the shift is. There is no reliable public measure of how many buying journeys now start in an assistant, and the numbers circulating are mostly estimates repeated until they sound official.
How it differs by sector and by country. A category where buyers must check a regulator's site behaves differently from one where a summary is enough, and there is no published breakdown worth quoting for India specifically.
Whether the assistants will keep citing as they do now. Citation behaviour has changed before and can change again. A strategy built on one app's current display of links is fragile.
Whether a citation produces revenue. Being named is not being chosen. Attribution from an assistant answer to a sale is mostly missing.
What we can say is narrower and more useful: measure both traffic and mentions, because the two can move in opposite directions and only one of them is in your current report.
Common questions
Is SEO dead?
No. The technical work still decides whether a crawler can read you, and being ranked still puts your page in front of the retrieval step. What changes is the target. Ranking puts you on a list. Being named puts you inside the answer.
Should I block AI answers from using my content?
It is a legitimate choice and it has a cost. Blocking removes you from the answers your buyers read, which for most businesses is the wrong trade. Publishers with paid content sometimes decide differently, and the two cases should not be copied from each other.
How do I see assistant referrals in analytics?
Look for referrals from the assistant domains in your referral report. The counts are usually small. Check the behaviour of those visits rather than the volume, because a handful of well informed visitors can be worth more than a large number of casual ones.
Will my traffic come back?
For pages whose whole value was a short fact, plan on the assumption that it will not. The honest move is to stop expanding that kind of page and to put the effort into pages that support a decision.
Do I need a different team for this?
Usually not. It is the same people doing a briefing differently and adding one measurement. The new skill is stating facts and limits plainly, which is a decision about what you are allowed to publish more than a writing skill.
What should I report to my management now?
Three numbers rather than one: search clicks, assistant referrals, and mentions on a fixed blind question set. With one number you cannot tell a traffic change from a visibility change, and they need different responses.
What to do first
- Split your reporting into search clicks, assistant referrals, and mentions in answers. Three numbers, not one.
- Check your analytics for referrals from assistant domains. Most businesses have never looked and are surprised either way.
- Sort your pages by whether they state a short fact or support a decision. Stop investing in more of the first kind.
- Take a baseline mention reading now, so that when traffic moves you can tell which of the two things happened.
The advice that does not change is the dull one: keep publishing pages that answer real questions with real specifics. Those pages earn the click when there is one and earn the citation when there is not.
