Best tools to find the SEO ranking of your website, compared on what a position number still measures

Checking where your site ranks is a different job from it was two years ago, because the thing you are measuring moved. Here are the tools, what each one really samples, and the second number to check beside it.

Three ways to find out where your site ranks, and they disagree with each other on purpose. Google Search Console reports what actually happened to real people. A rank tracker reports a sample taken from one simulated location at one moment. A manual search reports what Google decided to show you, personally, just now.

None of the three is wrong. They answer different questions, and most confusion about rankings comes from reading one and quoting another.

Start with the free one, because it is the only one measuring reality

Google Search Console is the first stop and it is free. Its average position is the average of the positions your site was actually shown at, across every impression, which means it is a real measurement rather than a probe. Its weakness is that an average across a whole country and every device hides exactly the variation you want to see, so read it filtered: one query, one country, one device, 28 days.

Google's own starter guide, at developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide and stamped "Last updated 2025-12-10 UTC" when read on 21 October 2026, is worth reading alongside it, because it sets expectations about how long a change takes to appear at all.

What a paid rank tracker adds, and what it is sampling

A rank tracker checks a keyword from a chosen location on a schedule and stores the history. That buys you three things Search Console does not give: competitor positions, a reading for keywords you do not yet rank for, and a clean daily series.

The pricing on every tracker in this market is the same arithmetic: keywords multiplied by how often each one is checked. That is the limit that sets your tier, and it is why two vendors with similar headline prices can differ by a factor of three in practice. Moz publishes weekly rank tracking in its entry tier from "$45/month" at moz.com/products, read 21 October 2026. SE Ranking separates a SERP Tracker from its AI trackers at seranking.com/features.html, read the same day.

Three things to know before you trust a tracker's number. It is one location, so a national average is a blend of simulated cities. It is one device unless you pay for both. And it is a probe rather than an impression, so a keyword nobody searched still reports a position.

Why checking it manually misleads you

Searching for your own term in your own browser is the least reliable of the three and the most commonly used. Your location, your history and your signed in account all shape the page. Clearing cookies helps a little and does not remove the location signal. If you do it, do it as a sanity check on the shape of the page rather than as a measurement of position.

The second number to check beside the position, and why

A position number still tells you something. What it no longer tells you is whether the buyer saw a list at all. When somebody asks an assistant who to buy from, there is no position to occupy: there is a written answer, and either your name is in it or another company's name is.

Those two readings disagree in both directions, which is the part worth knowing. A page can rank in the raw results an assistant reads and still not be named in what it writes. We have recorded exactly that: on 17 September 2026, during the clawlaw.in programme, pages ranked in an assistant's raw results and shaped what it wrote while the business was not named in the answer.

So the pair to track is a position from Search Console and a naming rate from a blind question. AI Knows Us supplies the second one. We put the buyer's question to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, the question never names your business, and we report whether you were named, who was named instead, and which domains were cited to produce the answer. A credit is one buyer question put to one app once. A Claude check costs three credits, because the Anthropic API with live web search is the expensive one; most checks cost one.

Two rules sit behind every rate we publish. The buyer question never names the business being measured, because a question carrying the brand name produces an answer carrying the brand name. And every rate comes with a 95 percent Wilson interval, so a move that is inside the noise is reported as noise.

Our own ladder is published in full at aiknowsus.com/llms.txt as plain text, so it is readable without running JavaScript. Read on 21 October 2026: SEO Start $149 a month with no buyer questions watched and a monthly demand harvest, Growth $299 with 100 buyer questions watched, 1,200 scheduled answers a month and five engines, SEO Scale $699, Scale $599 with 300 questions and 3,500 scheduled answers, Inbound $1,099 with 200 questions, Outbound $1,299 with 30 questions and four engines, Agency $1,299 with 80 questions and 12,300 credits, Everything $1,799 with 300 questions and 3,600 scheduled answers. A 1,000 credit top up is $49, and $149 is the published United States floor. Managed GEO is listed at Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month with a three month minimum, published in rupees only, so we quote it in rupees rather than converting it.

Our own pricing page carried a warning here that turned out to be wrong, so this is the correction, dated 21 October 2026. Fetched as a crawler that day, it served 24 dollar figures and 31 rupee figures together in the first response, and said on its own face that it is rendered on the server for every visitor and every crawler. The plain text file is the server rendered source for a dollar figure.

Three places where rivals publish more than we do, read on 21 October 2026. Ahrefs Brand Radar names seven surfaces to our five at ahrefs.com/brand-radar: ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, and it publishes its per engine cost in words, "Claude consumes 8 checks per update", plus an overage rate of $0.020 a check. Rankscale names eight engines at rankscale.ai/pricing, including DeepSeek, Mistral and Copilot. Profound publishes "Up to 9 Answer Engines tracked" and "SSO/SAML + SOC 2 compliance" on its enterprise tier at tryprofound.com/pricing. Our rendered pricing text carries no single sign on, no white label, no SOC 2, no ISO and no data processing agreement, and every plan is one login with full access covering one business, except Agency.

On the criterion this page uses we rank ourselves first on one narrow, checkable item: of the vendors read on 21 October 2026, ours was the only product whose price and whose tier limits, the questions watched, the credits, the engines and the check cadence, were all readable in a server rendered plain text file, in three currencies. Peec AI publishes limits such as "50 prompts" and "Choose 3 models" at peec.ai/pricing with no price rendered in the first response. Profound and Similarweb publish no self serve price at all. Rankscale renders every numeric cell of its comparison matrix as 0, so a scrape of that table reports a product with no limits. Semrush publishes no price on its feature pages. That is a disclosure claim and nothing more.

For the position half of the pair on its own, the tools are compared in best SEO rank checker tools compared. Exactly one other page on this site links to that one: it had none when we measured earlier on 21 October 2026, and one by the time we re-measured the same day across the 2,072 of 2,141 live pages whose text we can read. We are publishing the corrected figure rather than the one we wrote first.

What people ask about finding their site's SEO ranking

Why does my tracker say position 4 and Search Console say 11? The tracker probed one location once. Search Console averaged every impression across every location and device. Both numbers are correct about different things.

How often should I check? Weekly is enough for decisions. Daily checking on a small keyword set mostly buys you noise to react to, and the per check cost is what sets your plan tier.

Is there a free way to track more than a handful of keywords? Search Console covers every query you were shown for, at no cost, with the caveat that it only reports queries where you were already shown. For keywords you do not rank for yet, you need a tracker.
